    Garmin GPS750S

A quick rundown on the Garmin GPS750S. Its hooked up as the engine instruments through the NMEA2000 interface to the DF175 Suzuki.

Touchscreen is a nice feature, as long as you remember to wipe your hands after handling bait or fish, and can be challenging while travelling in a reasonable swell. That said, it is easy to use even with large fingers.

Display is easy to read and the overlays can be customised on each screen to provide ancillary information including real time fuel usage and fuel remaining. One feature I would have liked to have seen is RPM available on the overlays for the gps and sounder screens. The screen is 7" diagonal, which is enough real estate to display the GPS/Sounder split screen with a horizontal overlay at the bottom of the screen providing a range of options that the user can specify including speed, fuel, water temp etc.

The unit came with a 600w transducer, and is a dual frequency unit and there is a split screen to display both if required. As a novice i use the fish symbols and depth indicator, and have used it when jigging for kingies in 65M of water with the fish at 30M with some success on the day ;^)

On the GPS side of things, you have a choice of two charts, a navigation chart and a fishing chart, the fishing chart shows more depth contours, a feature I have found handy when searching for the Step between Bermagui & Montague.

I like the clean look of the dash without instruments, but the minor annoyance is that GPS information is not available on the engine instruments screen as an overlay, and with a single engine you get analog style instruments instead of the bar graph display that is shown in the brochures.

The unit was reasonably easy to configure, although it took me a couple of minutes to work out that you have to switch the ignition on to add fuel, makes sense though, if the engine NMEA isn't on the unit can't "see" it.

From experimenting, it seems that you need to buy the aftermarket Garmin map if you want to use routing, as the GPS wanted me to go cross country when I tried to route to the harbour from South of Bermagui.

The unit has an external aerial, which is mounted beside the unit immediately behind the windscreen, and is clear of the hardtop. It showed signal from 13 satellites when checked.

There is a man overboard feature that is handy for marking a patch of flatties when drifting because it is so easy to use, and may come in handy if one of your crew goes swimming.

Track management is a bit onerous, if you get into the detail, having to select color for track and then which track colors to display. Can make for a very busy screen if you don't do your housekeeping and your fishing the same are for a month solid.

There are a few information screens, tide tables being very handy.

I used Mapsource to transfer the waypoints from our previous GPS. You have to copy the files onto a card that was formatted, inserted in the unit to get the ID and then placed into the PC. Quite simple once you have done it, but then I am not big on reading manuals.

The only similar item I have had opportunity to use is a Lowrance HDS5 and my only comment would be that the larger screen is nice, but not relevant , and I prefer the touch screen.

Is it worth two grand? We didn't fit engine instruments so we saved a few dollars, but only a few after the cost of the Garmin/Suzuki rigging kit. It does make the grade on geek value and minimalist helm. All up yes, a bit more than the basics and a screen big enough for aging eyesight.

They claim the unit can drive a 1Kw transducer, but I couldn't justify the extra expense, we don't go deep dropping.

All up, very happy with the unit. Just got notified of a software update, will provide more info after the update is installed.

    Cheers

    Nice one,

Garmin havent quite got all the nmea data options yet, the engine can display quite a bit more data, garmin are starting to get there tho.

Had a good look at the 750, unfortunately did not have the dash real estate.. had to go the smaller brother..

From my observation, Garmin has most of the bases covered, and it seems the engine doesn't provide the data. I can get RPM, temp, trim, volts from the Suzuki, Garmin will cover oil pressure, oil temp, fuel pressure, engine boost (assume for Verado) throttle position and a couple of other I can't recall.

Satisfactory for what we do, but option to customise Engine Instrument display would be nice.

Which little brother? Is it touch screen? interested to know what others think of the Garmin interface

    Cheers

    Re: Garmin GPS750S

    The 556,

Garmin hasnt always followed the nmea standards, they have lagged behind only in the nmea data that can be displayed.

the ECU of the engines is able to present the data, just the head unit has not had the capability to display the information.

The GPS unit is second to none, infact probly better than most. I have used them for 10 or so years, never once have I had an issue, (except the one time we had a operator error) but we dont talk about that..

    Re: Garmin GPS750S

I just ordered a 750S and I have new Suzuki motors, I had the option of having no gauges and using the unit instead, but optioned for white gauges and the 750 will be a GPS/sounder only, why you ask? well I just sort of liked the look of gauges and sometimes (most times) I do not take the unit, because I am fishing in spots I know so well I dont need it. I reckon there is a ton of "features" that are a novelty but hardly essential, also kind of think (for me) the underwater contour is only "interesting" but then to others it is a big feature and electronics need to cater for everyone to sell big numbers. Why that unit? I have owned Garmin equipment before and kind of like their "brains" they seem so easy to use, and never had a failure (lets hope this continues)

I ordered the 750 today, however when I enquired about the Garmin G2 card I was told they don't display the Green Zones on them yet and that they expect the cards with the Green Zones on them in store in a "matter of weeks". Does anyone know any more on this? Would the green zones be available as an upgrade or do I have to wait for the new version of the card to come out?

Either way I can get by using the pre-loaded maps. What are you guys running in terms of cards/pre-loaded card?

    cheers

    Re: Garmin GPS750S

I can personally vouch for Waynes work as well as his pricing. He recently installed a 551s combo to my Blue Fin Barracuda and I'm very happy with the result and would recommend him to anyone. Although its probably at the lower end of the market I was very impressed with it, worth every cent in my opinion, especially with the G2 Vision card.

    Re: Garmin GPS750S

thx mate (sorry about next bit of info i didnt even know untill yesterday)

just to confirm garmin have released green zones on all charts brought from this week on wards g2 and g2 vision there is also quite a few beacon fixes on the gold coast,

i personally spoke to the newly apointed australia marine rep and a upgrade program will be happining to help out people who have allready purchesed a chart without green zones , a few things discussed - bring card to boat show and have upgrade capabilities on site to do there and then , send back via place of purchase for upgrade, upgrade will have a charge not sure how much but going buy others around $100.00 is the normal price but dont quote me on this just in discusion stage and i dont have any say just letting you know what we talked about.

    Re: Garmin GPS750S

Thanks Wayne for your help with this one, I may just buy the new version, saves having to deal with the upgrade. Only problem is I will be in 1770 for the week leading into the boat show (however will be in on the Sunday, I will drop in and say Hi). I had heard that there was a new marine rep for Australia, hope you enjoyed your weekend with him.

    Re: Garmin GPS750S

Just been messing about with my 750S and I am somewhat disappointed that they no longer have a "highway" mode of navigation, I preferred to use the highway, but others did not, so I guess the "did nots" where the majority, not that I can't use it in other modes, I just liked the old highway method, oh well, can't have everything I guess.

    Re: Garmin GPS750S

I like my 750S so far, but havent been in deep water yet to see how it goes. My old little garmin was no good in deep water. Got depth but no bottom shown.
I love Garmin GPS products, been using them for years in aeroplanes so it wasnt a hard decision to get the 750S installed in my new boat, got a good deal too, $1500 fitted completely. (it was already in the boat I was buying, so the dealer didnt have to remove it he gave it to me for that price)
I have Etec gauges so havent used the NMEA capabilities but its wired up to the engine.

I would like to connect it to my Garmin VHF radio too, can someone help on how to do this?

Noel, what about the 3D view, its from above and behind the boat, isnt that the same as the old highway view ?

    Re: Garmin GPS750S

nah, not really, the "old" garmin highway (and others) was a sort of (as the name suggests) a road sort of thing, there was a dotted line in the centre and a solid line either side, the sides where set to be a distance that suited you for being off course, and a small "boat" on the centre line was you! some models had sign post on the side to indicate distance to destination, now I can live without it, but I just liked to use it, others in my boat never used it, my son liked a plain old "plotter" (a line) sort of view, and my son in law like a compass rose to steer by.

    Re: Garmin GPS750S

I have a question for other 750 users, when you go into shallow water, like .5m for example, does the sounder depth readout get locked on that depth and flashing and not resume when you go into deeper water again ?

Mine seems to do it everytime and I can't reset it. Depending on which ramp I use here I can sometimes encounter such shallow water on the way to deeper water and its annoying, I have to turn the 750 off and back on again to see current depth. I cant find any reason why or how to fix.
