Thread: Freshwater virgins.

    Smile Freshwater virgins.

Hi, I havn't really done any freshwater fishing before even though I only live 15mins from Awoonga Dam!
My wife and I put the boat in the dam the other day just for a social ride. I am not one for chasing Barra as I have no idea on how to fish with lures, but I would like to know what fish we could target at the dam just by dropping a line over the side?
It is hard getting out to the reefs these days owing to the weather plus my wife feels comfortable on the dam, so we would appreciate any help so as we can make more use of this vast waterway.
    Thanking you.

I think there is yellow belly in Awoonga. You will find lots of info on how to catch them, here on aufish. It will be interesting to see how you go, because most people go to Awoonga for the barra.

    Welcome aboard ramjam,
Best luck with the bait fishing.Bit of advise..Hold the rod TIGHT.
If a stray barra comes along you could be in for a lot of excitement.
Heard of a group at monduran on houseboat..blokes in tinny got nothing,, women in houseboat got plenty fishing with bait
    Worth a try..

I chatted with two young guys at the Awoonga ramp one day. They were stoked - best day's fishing ever they said. Barra? - nup. Catties. Using frozen prawns for bait. They had a ball catching big fish that fought hard on light gear.

Forkies will be you best bet with bait. I've only heard of one Yellowbelly being taken in the last 10 years. May be some Mangrove Jacks available there though. You buy a couple of Halco Scorpion Crazy Deeps and just troll around the main basin. You never know when a Barra will find you.
