Hi All,
Well I can only quote what the pilot/guide told me on our arrival back at the airfield a helicopter is the best fishing boat invented and at this stage I would have to agree.
Whilst away on work duties last week in Darwin I was invited on a helicopter guided fishing jaunt for a day. We left the little airfield just out side of Darwin at 7:30 am flew out over the flood plain towards Shady Camp about half way out the pilot took us down and we landed on a very small bit of cleared land we walked over to a little Billabong and threw a 100mm slick rig three winds and a 65cm feisty little Barra hit the bank.
My fishing partner also hooked up a couple of minutes later and landed a fish at 72 cm's this continued on for about 20 minutes with a Barra a cast not big fish but excellent fun all the same.
I looked at my watch and the time was 8:45 am and we had landed 10 fish each how good was this. We then jumped back in the chopper and flew down to the mouth of Tommy Cut Ck once again at this spot the Barra were on all fish were around the mid 70 - 80 cm mark and this time all caught on Arafura Barra in the bleeding mullet color.
After about an hour of this the guide suggested we go foer a look for some other spots we headed off towards Sampan Ck we flew over huge mobs of pigs, Jabiru, Magpie Geese and the odd Buffallo, we again landed on a barrage and proceeded to catch more Barra on basically anything we threw at them after awhile the guide got us back in the chopper and we headed for a very secluded little beach where we had a lunch of gourmet sandwiches and a couple of ice cold drinks I started to wonder what the poor people were doing
The trip was supposed to last 10 hours and the guide was quite bewildered when we said we have had enough at 4pm in total we caught 50 barra nothing huge the biggest being 85cm's, threadfin salmon, cod, a few jack. I have to say this was an absolutely fantastic experience and I have already booked a trip again in August.
