    Cruisecraft 550 with Yammie 115h 4stroke

Still tossing up the options - repowering with the 115hp 4 stroke Yammie or the 140hp Suzuki...

Has anyone got any figures on fuel / speed / rpm ????

We can get a 2nd hand 2yr old 115hp 4stroke Yammie with 100hrs on for $9500.00 changeover whereas the suzuki 140hp new is going to be $13 500.00 changeover....

Don't want to spend the money on the Yammie to find out she doesn't have enough guts!!!

dont know the boat all that well, but I would reckon the 115 will be just OK, not under powered, but certainly a long way from over powered! have you rang around for new prices? when I was shopping, I got some very good prices on all sorts of brands.

chalk and cheese with these two motors, a 115hp on a 5.5m boat loaded with ppl and gear is well underpowered, you will use just about the same amount of fuel as the 115 will be under stress than the 140 would be, also you will have a great cruse speed with the 140

    Re: Cruisecraft 550 with Yammie 115h 4stroke

Hi Cass, I have a 115HP Merc Fourstroke on a 5.5 metre fibreglass halfcab. (similar to the CC 550). It has the same deadrise, approx same weight etc. Whilst not being a CC (it is a Pursuit 550) it will provide a reasonable benchmark.

At WOT I can achieve 68klm/hour downwind, and into a headwind of aprpox 10 knots 63klm/hour.

My most efficient cruise is approx 4800 - 5000RPM on the merc and speed is approx 45 klm/hour which is pretty quick. In Moreton Bay, I normally sit between 35klm / hour and 40 klm/hour due to the lumps and that feels safe (and still reasonable fast).

I fish offshore regularly in this boat. Sunday was a resonable day early and a safe cruise speed was 35 klms / hour. So no issue with top speed at all.

The four stroke takes approx 3 seconds to get on a full plane, mid range power is instant though, so crossing bars is not a problem. You will hear stories about 2 strokes being better for bar crossings, maybe if you are playing in them all day, but for the normal fisherman you only cross twice in a day and it more than does the job.

Not sure where you are from, but hopefully this will make sense:

From Manly to Tangalooma and return with 4 adults on board, sitting at 35klm/hour I use approx 36 litres of fuel.

For a full days offshore fishing - Manly to deep temptest and return I use approx 60 - 65litres of fuel (~10% variation due to return weather)

At cruise speeds of around 35 - 45klms per hour, I use approx 17 - 20 litres of fuel per hour. It takes approx an hour to get from manly to tangalooma.

I have had no issues with a 115HP on the 5.5 metre boat for crusing with family, crossing bars, offhsore fishing etc. There have been some magical days on the water where you think, Geez i would like to travel faster than 70 klms / hour. However, they are extremely rare, it is a litlle unsafe also.

The reality is that you dont/cant travel much faster than 45klm/hour in any case and mid range power is great.

Personally I would strap on either of the motors you are looking at: both brands and HP. So I dont have a bias either way.

There is approx $4000 difference in cost, that may stray my decision somewhat though.

There will be an additional two years warranty on the 140 though and there would be a strong argument that the 140 would return a higher resale as it is new. The wararnty isn't too much of a concern, Yama's are a quality motor and if looked after they wont experience any issues. Did you want to outlay more now and potentially get more back when you sell? Or less now and slightly less later??

Both are great motors, someone else may be able to give you the details on teh 140HP. I suspect approx a 10% higher than my stats above e.g. fuel at 18.4 - 22 litres, top speed at 71 - 76 klms/ hour etc.

I hope that helps. Regards Adam

Thanks - we have had a quote for $13 200 for brand new Yammie 115hp 4 stroke - so only a couple of hundred less than the 140hp suzi... someone suggested merc optimax but really wanted 4 stroke cos of the fumes....

    Hi Cass,
Go the 140hp Suzuki. I'm a great believer in max horsepower that is avialable because you can always throttle down but a bit hard to throttle up when you are already flat out. Also with a bigger hp motor you can have nice cruising speed and not wringing the date out of the motor.

    Re: Cruisecraft 550 with Yammie 115h 4stroke

how long you planning on keeping the boat? i'd say the 140HP suzi will have similar fuel figures as the 115 Yammi above being that you can throttle back and the motor will not be working as hard, find out how heavy that boat above is and search how heavy yours is will give you an idea cos not every 5.5m fiberglass half cab is same weight thats for sure.

If you love the boat and want to keep it for years to come treat it with the 140 Suzi you wont look back.

    Re: Cruisecraft 550 with Yammie 115h 4stroke

Gee I must take a spin with someone who owns a 140 Suzy - I have followed people offshore who have, where my 115 Yammy 4S seemed content to follow at any speed the others were doing. Anyone who has been on board my boat ( Yalta 555) seems to think power is more than adequate. I seldom go faster than 50kph offshore anyway, it's simply too fast for most passengers comfort in any sea offshore, except for those 1 in 10 days it is totally glassed out where it might be nice to have a cruise speed of 60kph instead of it being WOT with my engine. Another year and I'll be getting a better prop from Solas anyway, which will increase my top end for sure.

    Re: Cruisecraft 550 with Yammie 115h 4stroke

I've got a 115 2 stroke on my tin boat, a 5.45 tabs and it feels underpowered sometimes. If i had the money it will be a 150 hp ( next upgrade). It's always better to have more power then less.

go the 140 it is better to have more power than not enough

    Re: Cruisecraft 550 with Yammie 115h 4stroke

I have a Cruisecraft 510 and am thinking of a similar upgrade. Similar hull to yours. 140hp is max on my boat. Currently a 115hp 2 stroke.

Weight should be your biggest consideration. Thats why I'll stick to a 115hp ... probably a Merc cause its the lightest 115hp 4 stroke.

Whats the differences in weight between the 115 and 140hp ?

If in doubt ... contact Kevin at Cruisecraft. He built it ... so he will know what the best way forward will be. Good, solid and free advice !

go the 140-Ive got a yammy 115 4s and its a great motor, very quiet and smooth but for the same money Id have the 140 suz, similar weight also.

    Re: Cruisecraft 550 with Yammie 115h 4stroke

There are alot of Bill Barry Cotters on this site! The simple fact is if your using this boat offshore on 99% of days if you drive at any more than 20 knots you'll have to see your dentist once back to replace all your fillings!! Both motors will do the job easily, so it really is just a personal preferance thing!

ps I'm suprised the old hull shot for bar work furfey hasn't been raised though!!
Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!

    Cass449,

firstly the zuke 128hp, there are a few threads that will dispel that rubbish. just search, 138HP.

Brian, I took it easy on you...

this thread has stats on both motors on the same hull, my engine has a 4 blade while the 115 has a 3, about the same sort of hull weight.
