    Casting weights?

    Hey all.
First post so please excuse my newbiness.
I'm after a rod mostly to use for surf but also off the rocks. I'd prefer a 2 piece 10' as I don't use those rod holder things, I will be casting it and spinning mostly for hours at a time.
I'm a bit confused about casting weights. My priority is to be able to cast as far as possible at the beach which will sometimes require a sinker. I want to be able to really let it rip without holding back because of the rod being too "flimsy". The Sensor Surf has a casting weight of up to 3/4 - 3oz (21 - 84g), the Seajigger is 35 - 100g for the 10' and 75-175g for the 10'6. I guess what I'm asking is if these rods can handle a decent sized sinker (I can't find out how much they weigh) along with a pilchard.
If not, whats a decent rod that can? Or are there any other rods I should consider?
I know I'm trying to get the best of both worlds here with a rod that's big enough for surf but also light enough to cast all day off the rocks but I just want to buy the one decent rod and be done with it.
    Budget is $200-300.
Edit: I'll mostly be fishing for Tailor, Salmon, the odd Mulloway.

    Thanks all.

    Where abouts are you situated?

I ask because Wilson and Gary Howard Rods both make a decent surf casting rod on 5 & 6 wrap blanks. Both rods are under or close to $200 and can be had 2pce.
Wilson also do a variant on a live fibre blank.
I actually checked them out yesterday at my local tackle store, nice rods.

Hi, I'm in Perth. What are wrap blanks and fibre blanks?

I just thought of something else. Why do they list a minimum cast weight? What happens if I use a bait or lure that's below the minimum cast weight?

    Hi ,
A 5 wrap blank has 5 layers of fibreglass .The more wraps you have the stronger the blank. A 6 wrap blank is a good alrounder.
The cast weight is there to give you an idea of the weight which is best suited to the rod {sweet spot}. Anything under or over is not going to get you the performance your after.
Its a tuff ask for a rod to suit multiple applications but here goes ,Daiwa emblem pro,Custom Graphcast 4 if you can find one,Penn also make one.Ther are others but the price goes up according to Quality eg [Zenaq, Daiwa moonbeam,Ripplefisher]
If you went custom, Blanks are [lamiglas ron arra, batson, st crois, zziplex] to name a few.
    Hope this helps Graham

I would buy a $200 spinning rod and a $100 rod for tossing baits compromises are always just that and a bait rod spinning feels woeful as does a spinning rod tossing baits. The daiwa rods you mentioned are fine as are gary Howard Phantom and plenty more and for tossing baits Penn produce some good cheap surf rods in that bracket Rayannes have some good specials on the rods you mentioned and you can pick up the other anywhere.
