Went for a fish yesterday arvo, put the boat in at the Private ramp on Alligator creek, and headed towards the mouth. the 30knt winds coming of Anthony were a bit of a bastard, but we managed to get in nice and close to the mangroves and get out of most of it.
Was chasing jacks in some nice snaggy country, started using some nice and small 5-7cm live mullet. Couldn't get away from the barra though, when the livies were attracting nothing but barra, we went to dead bait, and still caught barra, then we went to slab baits and still produced barra. No stonkers amongst them, but the biggest went about 75cm caught on a slab of mullet. No matter what bait we used, we just couldn't get away from them, be a bit of a bastard to go nearly 3 months staying away from them just to get done catching them 3 days out from season opening so we pulled the pick and moved to fish the run out tide.
Was a little quieter at the next spot, but we still couldn't get away from the big scaled perch....pity we couldn't find this type of action when the season was open last year. Ended up packing up and heading home at about 8pm. For the session, every bait yeilded at least a dropped barra, with 4 coming over the side to be de hooked and released asap. Didn't take any pics, just de hooked and released as quick as we could.
Heading back to the ramp with the torches going was interesting, spotted 7 crocs in a 5km stretch of river, 3 of which were in the crap your pants big region on the hugeness scale, but no croc numbers are 'steady' in qld .
