on a 5 metre or close aluminium runabout which would be the best option, 1st an 08 model low hour (approx 120 from memory) 60 Yamaha four stroke, 2nd an 05 model 237 hour Mercury 75 four stroke and lastly an 04 model 155 hour Mercury 90 2 stroke. My head says go with either of the four strokes for quieter running with better economy, but the head is thinking of the fun of the 90.
i have an 80hp 4st yamaha on my 5.1mt quinnie and it would not want to be any smaller.

90 Hp 2 stroke definately. A 60hp fourstroke on a 5m boat is gutless in any configuration bar tiller steer.
The 75 will do it but the 90 will be a lot more fun.
90 2st if your going to tow tubes, skurfin, bar crossings, Ive got the yam 90 carbed , I think the merc has more power = more fun

I am leaning towards the Savage purely because of the power, I am going to see it and the Allycraftwith the 75 tomorrow. I have already spoken dollars with the Savage owner and $21k is the lowest he will go.
With fuel consumption I have been told that the fours are only a lot better when idling or trolling, which I dont intend on doing much of anyway.
I like four strokes, but for the style of boat you are looking at ...

My last boat had a 90 merc two banger had it for ten years forget how many hours very reliable but very loud! Smoked like a champion at start up, although using quicksilver oil helped a bit, it jumped around on the transom at idle which got annoying after a while. All in all I loved it! Having said that I now have a 175 four stroke Suzuki and I wouldnt be without it now.
On a boat that size 90 would be the minimum, you can always back off the throttle, if you really want to that is

how wide is the boat has it got a broad set of shoulders that have to be pushed through the water or is it a long boat style ? I reckon if it is 2 or 2.1m wide then you could "just get away" with the 75 if it is wider then the 90m would be my only option
