    Nick's first Snapper

I had the great pleasure of taking my 5 year old son out to catch his first "deep sea" fish earlier in the week and what a moment to remember.
He has done more than his fair share of fishing in the Bribie Passage and loves nothing more than either fishing from a boat, or the jetty and he will pull crab pots all day.
In fact, when you take him fishing, the hardest job for the day is actually getting him home.
So, Dad and his boy Nick headed out for their first big adventure with the aim of catching a Mackeral. The water was quite dirty and I couldn't find any bait around the shipping channel markers, but we did a drift over some broken gravelly ground and got this Snapper, which went 2.67 kg, on the first drop.
With the fantastic weather we have been experiencing since the rain and floods of the past few weeks, I thought there would be no better time to get the little bloke out there in pretty calm seas.
We tried for about an hour for a Mackeral, so a drift before we went home was my final option. I thought we would go home empty handed to be honest, so this was a real bonus.
The fight was something worth remembering. Nick is a determined independent little bloke and wanted to do it all by himself, as you do when you're 5, but unfortunately the rod snapped in half during the fight, so Dad had to take over with the fish 3/4's of the way in, but Nicky netted the fish also, so for a first up effort, I was so proud.
    He was pumped too!
All I got to get him to do now is not to high stick my Egrells....
Anyway, I took him and another mate out of Wednesday Australia day and he got another Snapper which was just over legal, so now he is getting around calling himself the Snapper King. Dad caught 2 Grinners and now he is calling Dad the Grinner King, mmmmmmmmmm.
All good and this is something both he and his Dad will never forget. Go little fella. Enjoy the pic,
    Tim

The smile on his face is absolutely priceless and well done on the young lad! Bet you have forgiven him already about the Egrell.

Ditto what Tickleish said, I cant wait for my little girls to be old enough to go fishing with their old man

    Re: Nick's first Snapper

It always brings a lump to my throat and a bit of a tear to my eye to see kids getting their first fish and the smile on their face. It usually means they are hooked for life, especially when its a quality fish like that.

Have finished up an emotional wreck at the end of the day at the many 'disabled kids fishing days' and 'take the kids fishing clinics' I have helped with over the years.

    Well Done Dad

well done mate, it sure is a good feeling when they catch there first and i also think this realy sinks the hook in on the fishing bug for the rest of there lives.
a snapper for there first fish, it can take years for some to get the chance for a snapper, so yep the snapper king it should be . this maybe a life time memory for him of his first snapper, for as long as he dosent rember you as the grinner king lol.

    cheers jp

    Re: Nick's first Snapper

    Thanks everyone.
He has caught plenty of Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Blue Spot Stingies and the like, but on his first trip outside, this is an excellent start.
I won't have too much trouble finding a deckie from now on, but at his age, the weather has to be spot on though.
I can remember when I was young, my Dad and Grandfather taking me and my other siblings freshwater fishing and fishing in the Bribie Passage back in the olden days.
I have an old Silstar Crystal tip which may have to be his rod from now on, this thing is almost unbreakable, but hey, the Egrell is still just a fishing rod and this experience is priceless. Though he does like the sexy graphite ones.
Bring on some more good weather.

What an awsome post Tim!! I still remember my first fish and its what deffinately got me hooked.. not so much the fish but the way in which it got caught, my grandfather (r.i.p) took me out on the Narooma inlet when i was about 6 and having mooved from the southern highlands of NSW this was so exciting. I remember catching some huge kowunyoung about 1 kilo each (For those who are going what the hell are they) they are overgrown yakka's with a lot darker colouration. That was it for me.. Thanks Pop
dont knock on deaths door... ring the doorbell and run... death hates that!!
