Peel & Bird Islands on Australia Day

Despite forecasts of massive crowds, Kyle & I decided to lauch pre-dawn from Wello Point for a morning session on the southern bay. Road to Wello was reduced to one lane in a couple of places but there was no traffic and we launched without any delays.

No debris and calm seas saw us fishing north Peel before the sun came up over North Straddie. While the water quality was good and turtles were plentiful the bait schools were scarce and we could not manage a single snapper. We tried a few spots and the headed to Bird for some breamin as the boat traffic was getting heavier.

First cast I nailed a feisty grassy emperor and soon after a 50cm dusky, both on small bream lures. A little while later I managed the first bream of the morning at 25cm. While we were fishing we noticed a heap of action in the shallows on the other side of a small sand bank.

We quietly leccied around there, tying on surface stickbaits on the way. First cast saw two big boils behind my lure and second cast I scored a 27cm bream. Shortly after Kyle got a similar sized bream. Both were our first bream on surface offerings. I got another small grassy when I changed back to a shallow diving lure.

It went quiet on the tide change so we headed home, stopping at north Peel where I picked up two small snapper on plastics in quick succession before we again got tired of being bounced around in all the boat traffic.

Back at Wello Point the ramp was quiet and we got straight out of the water and headed home. Cleaning the boat and packed up by midday. All fish were released to fight another day...

Did notice a council parking inspector booking cars parked in car & boat trailer spaces - about bloody time!

    Cheers

Im sure I saw a council notice that said Wello point was closed to ALL vehicle traffic on Australia day.

    Hmmmm.

My dictionary defines green as ‘unripe, immature, undeveloped'. Perfect description.

Most political parties are seen as interested in what the voters think, the Greens are seen as thinking the community should be interested in what they think.

No mate, that changed on Tuesday and they allowed vehicles (including cars & boat trailers) up to 4.5 ton on Australia Day. This is the norm for now...

Lane restrictions will continue to apply for some weeks until repairs are finished but Wello Point is definitely open!

    Thanks Peter.

Seems the council changed their mind, AGAIN.
