Resale - sure, but think of how many blokes on here and elsewhere like their Yammy V4's...they are just a classic and well thought of on every forum you care to research...so resale is not a big issue. the 115 Saltwater is one of the great motors Yamaha has made. The only reason I'd consider swapping mine for a 4s is to get some more range for the reef but it's a lot cheaper to add a couple of cans of fuel and transfer them when stopped in a sheltered spot. Never been bothered by "smoke" or noise. A 4s WOT also screams. And I don't care who I wake up when I flush back at the ranch. At cruising speed of 4200rpm I get around 1.5km/litre with normal 2 POB and the usual gear - when rough that drops back to 1.2km/litre (3300rpm) and with just me it goes to around 1.8km/l. Top speed 62kph.
Why not look at a High pressure direct injected 2 stroke, all the benefits of both motors, 2 stroke power and 4 stroke economy.

Hi BigE, I have a precision mix 115HP 2 stroke pushing a SF565 Southwind approx. weight in water is 1400kg's. One thing I will say is it seems to be very reliable, very strong gearbox, no complex electronics such as injection ect. If I was buying new I would try & stretch the $'s for the 4 stroke mainly for the resale, fuel consumption/torque at idle & trolling. At cruise speed my fuel consumption is very good & consistant with 4 strokes & similar size/weight rigs, specs attached with full tank 200L & 160L ice box & 2 guys. I have spent a lot of time lifting motor, changing props to get good economy. Mate has a 150HP 4 stroke Yamaha & it is silky smooth, very impressive. I have a used boat & motor & certainly could not justify upgrading to a 4 stroke with current boat. If I was buying new I would certainly stretch the $'s & buy the 4 stroke. Personal opinion.
Eveyone talks of resale.
Let's put it this way, if you were looking at a similar sized boat currently 7 years old with a 2 stroke motor with reasonable hours, if it had a 4 stroke with similar hours etc would it be $7000 dearer? Or just a few thousand more or just a better selling point.
If you pay $7000 more now, simply only to get $7000.00 more later on down the track then actually you've got nothing for your money have you?
You would need to get $7000.00 plus at least cpi over time to be in front, on the basis of "better resale value"
The benefits have to be elsewhere, i.e. lower running costs reliability or whatever it is.
Just a couple of bobs worth anyway.

the V4 2 stroke Yammie is a bullet proof engine but generally loves a drink of fuel and is smokey. It depends on your usage ie if your just motoring to your fishing destination and turning it off then its hard to justify the difference. But if you doing a lot of trolling and idling around then the 4 stroke is the way to go hands down. once you have had a 4 stroke it almost impossible to go back as its just a totally different boating experience. Yes resale and its not about the $$ value its more like you will have buyers that would not even consider your boat as it has a 2 stroke on it.

I would not pay 7K more for that motor based on the hours that you do, I would however look at a DI 2 stroke, as has already been mentioned,the 115 Opti is a good motor.
Eg: 175 Verado, 23K, 200 Opti, 18K, 5k pays for a lot of oil, the fuel difference would be neglible.
Lots of hours per year or lots of trolling time, perhaps the 4 banger.

Lots of points for and against, I think Iam leaning towards the 2 banger and keeping some coin in my pocket. they seem to have a good rep the 115 yam 2 stroke which was the question mark in my mind never having one before. I understand the resale issue, but i dont think i will be selling in the near future so i think over time that will lose it's impact, IE a 10year old 4s Vs a 10 year old 2 S will affect resale but not by 7 grand i dont think.

Big E, not to be disrespectful to your choice but I believe you need to be mindful of public/boating opinion in 5-7 years time. I don't think that in 5-7 years time you will be able to give away a carburetted two stroke. DI or Fourstroke will be all that is available and desirable in that time frame. Cheers Winston.

No disrespect taken mate ..... I asked for opinions and yours is as valid as everyone elses.
on the flip side..there are those of us that prefer the sting of a 2 stroke insted of the doughy 4 bangers..so we may be prepared to pay a bit more in that 5 to 7 years time bracket to get something with some punch to it.
Nothing "doughy" about my 175 Suzy! Its my first four stroke after having numerous two's and I dont think I could go back. So smooth so quiet and soooo much grunt.
