I got one about the same size at Round Top on the 31st. A buddy got a 4kg one in the shipping channel at the start of Dec.

    A bit unusual?

Whaaaaaat? Never heard of them being caught here??

I always assumed Golden Snapper and Pink Snapper didn't cross their invisable border.

Would love to know the furtherest north a pinky has been caught?

There was a decent Snapper, probably 5-6kg in the QFM a year ago caught in Townsville, photo and all.

Snapper are caught regularly off Mackay, but usually in the dead of winter. I doubt they would travle from southern waters so my bet is there is a small population that inhabits the deep waters outside the reef and come in to spawn in winter. Not a common catch, but may be something to do with their feeding habits, much more aggressives natured fish up here that tend to snavel your baits first, so unless you find a patch with good numbers of snapper, you probably won't see them.

So not too unusual of a catch, but yes strange to be caught this time of year

Was talking to our local fisheries officer a while back and he said that they've found big Pearl Perch in the bags of fisherman fishing the edges of the shelf as far north as Townsville!

We T&R a Striped Marlin on "Marlin Blue" a few years ago off the shelf 100miles off Airlie Beach!

Those in the know catch Snapper up here every winter!

Maybe what we know about cold water fish isn't as much as what cold water fish know????
