    Unhappy Congratulations - Banded Grunter

    Hi All

As a small boy growing up in the Lockyer Valley, I learnt a lot about fishing, bait fishing the Brisbane River catching mullet, spangled perch and jew - catfish.

This fishery is now completely destroyed by Banded Grunter. Great for lure tossers but not so good if you are starting out to learn about fishing.

Supposedly they were incorrectly released into Somerset Dam. From Somerset they made their way to Wivenhoe and then to the Brisbane River.

Now with a healthy population in the Bris River, the concept of Dad taking the sons for a quiet fish with a few worms in the River is lost.

As the circle of life continues I have taken my own boys perch fishing to start the cycle over again. What dismay I uncovered recently on a fishing trip to Kalbar? A fishing trip of red bubble floats, garden worms and a handline.
To find Banded Grunter in the Reynolds creek below Moogerah sank my heart to great depths.

With the great flood it now appears that Banded Grunter will now infiltrate the whole Bris / Bremer catchments?

The "idiots" who mistakenly stocked Somerset with Banded Grunter were never taken to task.

So congratulations to those idiots for a complete and utter stuff up

    Stocked in with bass fingerlings.

I was told due to bad QA from a breeder with the grunters living in the growout ponds & so harvested along with the bass fingerlings.

Makes a joke of the whole translocation policy. We have to be super carefull about what gets stocked where but for pest fish, it seems anything goes.

Thanks mate, I guess I'm one of the idiots you're referring to. Maybe if you'd done a little more research you would have discovered the truth, before referring to the group of people who have provided Somerset and Wivenhoe, the best Bass fisheries around, idiots. The Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association meets on the third Wednesday of every month, at the Fernvale Futures Complex. Please feel free to attend a meeting, and let us know how you could do it better.
There were threats of legal action when we had been supplied Banded Grunter instead of Bass. The same supplier possibly supplied them to Hinze, where they have appeared as well. I'm not too sure about any other waterways. When a group releases 50,000 fingerlings at a time, it is impossible to tell whether they are Bass or Banded Grunter. The Group purchases fingerlings from Government approved hatcheries throughout South East and Central Queensland, and with about 8 people involved in these releases, yes 8 because it is pretty much impossible to get people to volunteer for this work, it is not possible to check every fingerling with a microscope before release.
You can sit back and call us idiots if you like, or you could come and join us, see what we do and maybe bring your kids and show them what the hard working volunteers of the Stocking Association do to provide your fishery to you. Then you can explain to them why you call us idiots.

Dale - a serious question Not having a go at you guys. Respect what you do.

If you are unable to tell the difference with the fingerlings - then how do you know you guys released any?? Did the hatchery fess up at a later date ?

    Re: Congratulations - Banded Grunter

No Hatchery ever admitted to it. That's where the threats of law suits came into it. I'm sure they ended up in a lot more areas as well. Maybe even Moogerah which could explain them at Kalbar, although Budge has done the research to prove they came from Somerset and Wivenhoe. I'm not rich enough to mention the Hatchery's name here, so please don't ask. There is no definitive proof however we bought Bass and some grew into Banded Grunter. We know who we bought the Bass off.

I guess my question is more-so - could they have got there somehow else. My daughter lives on Lake Hugh Munce on the GC. The lake is full of them. Can't imagine anyone actually released them there. Can these things eggs be spread for example by birds.

Yes they can be spread by birds, that's how the Carp infestation started down south.

    Hi Dale,

Mate I wouldn't take it to heart this is a typical person who won't get off their backside to volunteer their services to help in something that they reap benefits from.
I saw it everyday as a junior rugby league coach where the people that reaped the benefits the most of the club and enjoyed what a very small number of volunteers provided were the ones that usually whinged the loudest and longest.

Therfore I moved on and now coach at a semi professional level where everybody is paid for what they do guess what not too much whingeing and whining, maybe we should begin to pay you guys for the countless hours you put in or maybe you guys can pay a fish bioligist to come and scan all fingerlings that you are about to release this could be done with an increase in the SIPS permit.

    Listen to them scream now

No where in his post did he mention anything about reaping any benefits from a stocked impondment.
This sort of thing is happening everywhere & not just from a stocking mistake.

A ballsup is a ballsup and this ballsup was a bad one irrespective of whos fault it was. it should never have happened and should never happen again. Obviously the stocking group or the stockist needs a better QA system in place so this occurence doesnt happen again.

    Re: Congratulations - Banded Grunter

The release of Banded Grunter in Somerset and Wivenhoe occurred almost 10 years ago. Any other dam that released fish at the time from the same supplier probably got them as well. Moogerah did, Hinze did. The original poster has photos of Bass caught in Maroon and a Mary River Cod caught in Somerset. Both of these fish were put there by volunteer stocking groups. He has now singled out the Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association and referred to them as idiots, which I personally find offensive. The invitation is there to attend a meeting and express his views. The anonymous public insult is not really neccessary considering all the facts are not known by the original poster.

If they are such a pest why is there a 20 bag limit on them?

To protect them from over-harvesting in their natural range.

Outside their natural range they're a pest with no catch limit.

    Re: Congratulations - Banded Grunter

    Budgebass.

Nobody knows how Barred Grunter got into SEQ waters. Hinze, Somerset, Wivenhoe, Stanley River, Brisbane River all seemed to get them at around the same time.

Could have been one or two mixed in with stocked fish by any of the following:
    Stocking Groups (various groups)
    DPI&F
    SEQWater
    Aquaculture industry
    Aquarium industry
    General Public
    Birds
    ???

There is no evidence or proof, its only a best guess as to how they got moved around. Most lean towards poor quality control from a commercial fish hatchery. Same as redclaw, these have never been stocked but theyve been spread far & wide on the back of aquaculute.

Yes its a tragedy & should not have happened. But to call fish stocking groups "idiots" is outright insulting to other Ausfish members.

I'm asking that you either appologise & retrack/reword your statement on your own back, or your post will be deleted as offensive. Infraction may follow.....

Someone is an idiot, its clear, and by your reply its not you so old mate should just aplogise and defer his idiot status on the real idiots. I take it the banded grunter is a native and in this case not in its native range?

This is a sad reality that so many noxious fish are present in all a lot of our waterways. hasten the day when our scientists can resolve these problems thru genetic intervention because human error hath wrought so much destruction. Carp, Tilapia Cane toads, its a mess.
