    Fish ID from creeks

Had a quick session on jacks on sunday but nothing around but i netted this funny looking fish with a cod looking head and colours like an oscar on its sides.
It was fat so it feeds well in the murky creeks. Any ideas?

    Re: Fish ID from creeks

Yeah definitely a sleepy cod as Assasin said.

There are two main species that are assocaited with the sleepy cod name - Oxyeleotris lineolatus and Oxy. selheimi.

From the photo I'd say you have a Oxy. selheimi. They have a rougher skin and have blotchy markings down the side, almost yellowy orange from some waters.

Oxy. lin. on the other hand is a bit smoother looking and has longitudinal lines down its body (sometimes hard to pick on dark fish) and smaller teeth.

Both are freshwater fish so this guy must have washed down with all the fresh around at the moment. They are supposed to be very good eating for a freshwater fish.

    Hope this helps,

    Richard

i dont think this is a sleepy cod guys,
they are pretty much a freshwter fish only.

my guess is a crazy fish (butis butis)
    often seen around the estuaries

    Re: Fish ID from creeks

Sorry guys but Butis butis (or upside down fish, crazy fish, etc) are gnerally pretty small, not growing more than about 12-15cm. The scale pattern is also quite different and they have a dark line which follows the lateral line, extending right past the eye to the nostril.

How big was this fish Dobson ?

It is true that sleepcod are generally freshwater fish but with all the flood water around at teh moment and the fact that sleepy cod are poor swimmers, it is likely that the fish was washed out of it's natural habitat. While not exactly being euryhaline (live in either salt or freshwater, eg barra, jacks, bream to an extent) the amount of fresh around would make it easy for this to survive down in waters which are normally saltier.

    cheers

Hard to tell from the photo but it looks like a type of gudgeon possibly a speckled or trout. A native freshwater species usually kept in aquariums.I think they are related to the sleepy cod

yeah i reckon it's a sleepy cod. sleepy cods are actually gudgeons not a true cod as we like to know them.
