    Re: Donnybrook bucks

They were full enough for us to get a good feed. If you only go crabbing once in while and you don't catch many crabs it is hard to throw back crabs this size for someone else to catch and keep that would not know if they were full or not ! They were well over legal size and taste great .

    outsider580,

Yes mate, you done well to catch those buggers. on prawn shells hey!!. I would have though the old catfish or bream would have been caught in the pot also.

Ye old mullet, chicken frame or fresh salmon head is what I normally use.

Better off you catching them than some other person to munch on.

    Cheers

    Thanks bondy99,
Obviously prawn shells are not something we use normally for crabs, just read it on line one night and thought i'd give it a go, just packed into onion bag and placed in pot . I think crushed oysters would work a treat also. fresh mullet is my usual bait when we get a chance to go crabbing.

    Well done.

They look great and it's also good they were quite full.

The smellier the better with crab bait my grandfather always said.
He have left the prawns out in the sun for as long as he could stand the smell.

    Re: Donnybrook bucks

    Hey mate,
We often use tinned catfood . The biggest buck on this trip went 1.7kg smallest 1.1kg.

Yeah mate i know what ya mean about throwing them back. seems a waste considering all the bloody effort to catch em in the first place, got a couple more today around donnybrook, few prawns starting to show up aswell!!

    Re: Donnybrook bucks

    Hi 2ezy,
Exactly my thoughts, if I caught 10 keepers every time I went crabbing it would be a different matter as I could pick and choose.

If you think about it, that full to the brim crab at just legal that is caught and kept seems to be no problem to keep right. Well that crab that is full as goog is just about to moult into a new shell to grow bigger so how come we don't throw them back. If that crab was not caught on that particular day it could have gone into a hole to shed it's shell and when it came back out of it's hole in next few days would be a cm or so bigger across carapass but have the same amount of meat but empty for its size and it's new shell. So same crab same amount of meat but bigger shell. So I have no problem keeping a crab that is not as full as it could be.
    I hope this makes sense.

    Re: Donnybrook bucks

makes sense to me. and yep banana prawns are about, seen a few today where I was, too many friggin snags where I was thanks to the flood, needed the flood for rhe prawns and not the mangrove trees

    Re: Donnybrook bucks

@ outsider580, yep for sure mate makes sense to me, only reason i throw em back is im the only one in the family that eats em so only need 1 or 2 for a good feed, plus the claw meat is my favorite and theres nothing worse than cracking open a big muddie claw only to get a little bit of "jelly like" meat.just my opinion anyways, hope ya get another crack at em soon, still quite a few around
