After all this rain i have been dieing to get out for a fish. A mate of mine has recently got the fishing bug so went down the coast and took him out. Fished around the broad water for a heap of undersized bream and jew but my mate got this whiting, absolute cracker went 44cm. Picked up a couple of crabs too.
it was just good to back onthe water.

Yeah he gave a fair account of himself too mate, he took a large fresh prawn. the muddies were all full too, which shocked me a little.

when the northern rivers of NSW were in flood or semi flood, there were a few spots in them that yielded some absolute horse whiting.....and the bait that did the damage was always fresh prawns. I say 'was' not because they dont do it anymore, but because I dont fish those rivers anymore. Prime spots were always around bridge pylons or stuctures mid stream that had large eddies behind them.
Well done on the muddies as well.

Absolute cracker alright well done it looks like it has a blue nose we used to get them out of Lota creek years ago but I havent seen one in ages.

Sleepy Greg, you picked it like a dirty nose mate, he got him in an eddie near some rock structure into a sand botom. Good call mate!
Axl, i haven't heard of a "blue nose" but after he had been on the ice for a alittle that mark on his nose came up, it was blue to start with though, is this another species of whiting?

Once again harking back to my days haunting the Mid North coast, and northern rivers of NSW......there were two fish we used to refer to as 'blue nose'. The XOS size whiting, and the winter run XOS bream taken on the ocean rocks and near the estuary mouths. If they were taken in clear water they usually exhibited a distinctly blue tinge around the lips and membranes between the eyes and nose. Not a different species..more a reflection of the water they had been feeding in previously....usually clear ocean waters. But over time it has been used to refer just to XOS specimens of the same species.
My favourite spot for the whiting used to be the eastern channel under the Dunbogan bridge, until the local council in their infinite wisdom decided to remove the lights off the bridge......still havent figured out why they did that!!! Used to attract a heap of bait. Caught many a Jew, XOS Flathead, Eagle Ray, elbow slapper whiting off that bridge at night over the 25 years I fished off it.

Millsdude I dont think that they were a different spieces I think sleepygreg has hit the spot.
They were XOS fish and you just dont see them anymore. Perhaps the water and food qaulity was a little better back then.
Im not to sure if bluenose is the right term however that is what we used to call them. The water quality must have been pretty good around where you landed him?
Lets hope there is a few more hanging around waiting for your lines!!!!
