mackeral, gt E.C.T, land based sunshine coast

Hi everyone, just woundering if anyone could give me a location, fishing setup to target some larger fish of land in the sunshine coast region. i have heard people catching spottys of the rockwall at mooloolaba and im keen to try floating some pillys of the wall when the weather improves. I prefer to fish with berkley gulp and have caught a 1.5+ spotty mak of the rocks at double island point, far out best fishing experience, felt sic it was that much off a rush on a 4" minnow. Maybe around the mooloolaba, kawana, maroochydore posibly noosa or caloundra areas. i have aslo caught a mack tuna in the bay but have now sold the boat as of today. Any help would be highly appreciated. I am know land based and did not want the mackeral/tuna season to go to waste. Also im more then happy to catch a jew, gt or mangrove jack.

    Thanks FishinW

loaction: you will catch the above mentiond speciaes anywere along the east coast weather it be from a surf beach or a headland however to improve your chances you have to look at what will attract fish usually its all to do with were fish will feed. rocky headlands such as pt cartwright is well suited to fishing for pelagics there is ample bait in the bay and around the rocky bottom. also as an advantage to pt cartwright you have the river close by flowing out into the bay this is a source of food and is great to fish on an outgoing tide as the water pushs out into the bay.
method: a good method for catching a mackeral tuna etc is to float line a pilchard. being that your fishing off a rock platform a simple gang hook tiny sinker setup up wont work as you will snag the bottom to often. so ballooning baits off of a rock platform is a very good way to getting your bait out to were the fish are. same setup 3 gangs of suitable size for the bait tiny sinker to keep the bait down a tad away from the birds then a balloon attached via a rubber band 2 mtrs above the bait. this method is more suited to a day were the wind is blowing a light westerly as you can get your bait out along way by slowly feeding line out.
tackle: all comes down to preference budget etc. if i was fishing for mackeral off a landbased rock platform id probably go a medium surf rod with a shimano 6500 baitrunner. line size comes down to preference.

if you fish a good rock platform most of the time ull have a couple of bigger baits out far and you can keep yourself entertained catching bream etc off the rocks whilst you wait.

Thanks heaps mate, awesome information, so pleased to hear that im able to catch pelagics of land. Just woundering do you recommend strictly using a surf combo or will you get away with a more finesse outfit. I own a 6-8kg starlo stix with a sienna 4500. Im definetly going to try and get a fish in as soon as the bad weather pases and the water clears up. Sounds awesome cant wait to try of pt cartwright. I have had succsess of cartwright before as i caught a descent tailor, almost a greenback i guess, quite alot of machine gun fire lol, heaps and heaps of leagle bream and a single sand flatty (Did not keep any, catch and release or one fish i think) . Thanks again for such a useful post

the only problem you will have using a smaller size reel and a smaller size rod will be if you actually hook a decent pelagic you then have to get it up onto the rock structure you are fishing. with a good quality surf rod you can bungee your fish up onto the rocks with out to much hassel were as if you were using lighter gear you may require a second person with a form of landing net gaff system. for serious rock fisherman ive spoken to a cpl of guys who say they modify a extendable pool handle like what you use to vacume your pool with these extend like 10 mtrs and they modify a gaff head onto the end. only one way to find out and thats to get out there and have a fish if you hook up to something decent on your lighter stuff and it busts you off for whatever reason then you may have to purchase sumthing more suited

On the rocks at Caloundra spinning Raiders and poppers for GTs and Queenies etc. After that, Hells Gate at Noosa for Spaniards and Longtails, etc.

Hells gate at noosa is a supreme spot for GT,S and Mackeral BUT ! take caution before you start fishing whatch the platform for about 15 - 20 minutes befote you start .No joke every now and then you will get a large wave sweep over the platform . A few lost lives over the years and a lot of fishing gear swept away $$$$.best of luck

thanks guys for the posts, very helpful. noosa and caloundra sound great. im also very keen on having a fish of pt Cartwright. i will most likley have a fish at pt cartwright to get use to the whole idea of surf fishing. burleygu great info, i own a couple of cheaper surf rods javis walker 12ft and sum other one, quite crap as i do not do much of the style of fishing unless at double is pt/ fraser beach. im looking at spending only $100 could you please give me an idea of the combo which will be best value for money if not i do not care. seen heaps of great vids of people catching queens and would love to catch one for a first. The reason for targeting pelagics is that i do not really like fish. The first hit and the sound of the drag scearming beats any fresh seafood meal. gt, mackeral, tuna, queensfish meet all the requirements to me as being the best sport fish. i would love to than try fishing of the rocks when dad is not busy with the reno. thanks again guys.

by all means 100 bucks is fine to spend! in some cases its good especially for surf fishing as your reels and rods etc tend to get covered in salt water. as i said i prefer a longer rod off the rocks because you can control your fish more. penn and jarvy do good rods and reels quite cheap like anything at the end of the day hose it down will last you awhile if you care for it

Most of the headlands can be worth a spin. The best is Noosa from Hells Gate back to the Fairy Pools or the headland to the south (Lion Rock)
Do a search on Pistol_Pete and see the fish he pulls from the area

mate all the above advice is right on but if you try caloundra headland from the point towards the kings beach on a calm day you will get trevors, queenyies all sorts of mack and tuna as well as some nice parrot and sweeties but be prepared to loose a bit of gear the rocks step down in benches. go have a snorkel around and you will find the best spots to fish from and you might even pick up a odd cray.

    good luck

yeh nice mate, sounds like fun. im not to keen on the snorkel just because im not the best swimmer in the ocean. but all the other stuff sounds great. with fishing of the rocks with the fish noted above which is the best way to fish for them both Caloundra and noosa. im thinking slugs for the macs and tuna but with the gt and queens a float, soft plastics even slugs. also for the reefies a (patonotroes rig. im not shore.
