    Talking Moving to Cairns!

Moving to Cairns in a week and was just woindering what gear I'll need to fish the estuary and inner reefs.

From the Gold Coast and mainly have Bream/Flathead gear.

    Re: Moving to Cairns!

u can catch fish on that sort of gear in the estuary's up north but generally something like a daiwa sol 3000 and 701 hfs spin rod with 20 & 30 lb braid (2 spools) has got a few more balls when a big jack or barra hits.

inner reef or outer reef doesn't make much difference as the gbr starts only 16nm off cairns and even closer out of pt douglas and only 10 nm off cape trib.

80lb handline with an 8/0 hook and running sinker as light as possible is the standard rig for bottom bashing the reef and is hard to beat for simplicity and effectiveness.......however, coming from the goldy ur probably not as agricultural as us nq"s so i'd suggest any outfit capable of fishing heavy drags on 30 or 50lb braid. use 80lb leader and about 6ft of it to a running ball sinker if fishing on the anchor or a paternoster rig if drifting. 8/0 hooks are the go!

also handy to have a tld 25 or similar for sending a floating pilly or livebait out the back for a mackeral while bottom bashing. 12 - 15kg mono. hope this helps!!
