Snapper consultation extended by 6 weeks

The Queensland government has announced today (7th January) that consultation on future management arrangements for the Rocky Reef Fin Fish Fishery, including snapper, has been extended and meeting dates postponed. The consultation period for the RIS has been extended to 5pm on 8th April.
Port meetings are also being re-scheduled - in Mackay, Yeppoon, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Tin Can Bay - and are likely to now start in mid-March. New details will be announced soon and will be available on www.fisheries.qld.gov.au or by calling 13 25 23.
Can I encourage all AUSFISH members to use this additional time to tell the government how you feel so that they cannot ignore the voice of recreational fishers. Its up to you. Its your cause, its your lifestyle, so use your voice.
I am prepared to stand with you for a fair and just outcome for rec fishers.
    Regards,
    Mark

Mark, how about obtaining info on where our PPV levies go. Surely this should be able to cover the cost of the licence? I pay 2 boat rego's, one is a sailing boat stored in a private hardstand and launched using a private ramp. The sailing boat that costs me $270, would love to know what its used for including the PPV.

Andrew. I have tried to get that information in the past with limited success. You can find the question and answer at parliament by following the link below:

    I will keep trying.

My breif letter to Neil Roberts (and this is not the end of it).

    Hi Neil,

I am a boat owner that owns 2 boats. One is a fishing boat, 4.5m that I like to use to go fishing. The second boat is a 7.8m boat that I like to use to go sailing.

The first boat, is power boat that I primarily use to go snapper fishing. This boat costs me $166.65 a year to register. This include the $17.55 PPV levy.

The second boat is a sailing boat, that I use to go sailing. This boat costs me $276.60 a year to register. This boat is stored in a private hardstand, and is launched using a private boat ramp. It has a small outboard with minimal carbon footprint. The registration fees for this boat also include a $17.55 PPV levy.

My question to you is, where does my PPV levy go? It seems I pay a large amount in rego for a boat that does not go fishing, and yet it still includes the PPV levy. And now your party wants to charge me a $90 licence fee to go fishing for snapper. A bit rich don’t you think? I have not complained about paying rego fees before, and not complained about paying PPV on a boat that never sees public facilities.

So Neil, I would like to know firstly where my PPV levy goes. A short answer like, ‘it goes to boat facilities’ is not sufficient. I want to know exactly where each dollar has been spent. At the end of the day, it’s me that’s helping to pay your wage, so a little transparency would not go astray.

Furthermore, I would like to know where my registration fees go. I am also a volunteer for Volunteer Marine Rescue, and I can assure you that we get little funding from you, in fact whenever we contact you for support we get snubbed. Pretty sad considering we provide an essential support service to QLD Water Police, as well as every recreational boat user on Moreton Bay.

I really don’t expect to hear a sensible response from you, nor do I expect to hear a response that is not coined from your team. Perhaps you could prove me wrong and supply those details.

    Hi Andy.
The transport minister - Rachel Nolan - is the one to write to about broader marine transport issues. In my question in parliament, she wouldn't answer the part about the recreational use component and referred me to the Fisheries minister, Tim Mulherin. So I think Mulherin is who you should write to about PPV. Note the terminology has changed - see my question in previous post.
Note also a previous thread on AUSFISH:

Thanks, Might send a letter off to Tim Mulherin too. Sent it to Neil because he is my local member. Waste of time I know, he does nothing for the local community, but perhaps its time us locals starting putting the pressure on him.

    Point noted about terminology.

you were doing alright with the letter till the last paragraph.... not the best way to encourage a value adding response, whether you think you will get it or not...
