    What ate this

Caught this Skipjack a while ago off Tweed Heads while trolling skirts, Not long after the hookup it gained weight considerably and then went limp.
I am guessing the marks are from a larger fish gill rakers?
    What do you think.

So I rigged the next tuna I caught as a skipbait for the next trip.
Trolled the thing around all morning for zip.

looks like seal teeth damage, but you wouldn't expect a lot of seals around tweed, though not unheard of

    Re: What ate this

I would have expected a shark or similar to have wripped it to shreds.

Looks to me like a billfish of some sorts has had a go at swallowing it

Had a very similar experience about 20yrs ago pulling up [what turned out to be] an undersize squire off Maloolabah. Por thing was still alive when i got it up (after fish X took it for a loooong run in its mouth) but was not long for this world. Half its scales either standing up or ripped right off, one of its eyes popped out of the socket and a general 'WTF was that?' look on its face. Come to think of it - me and my mate probably had the same look on ours.

    Re: What ate this

Depends where you were fishing at tweed because the local giant qld gropers that live around the bommies leave those marking regualy and on a lot larger tuna than that stripey usually they leave a huge radius bight shape around the fish but because of the weight of them on the lures if the fish is on one hook and the tuna on the other the lure usually straightens the hook out but occasionally down on the bommies marlin swallow whole mac tuna to 8kg and some of these are over 250kg but the marlin don't do the same damage on the tuna as those groper after landing one off nine mile 20 years ago that went around 200kg plus and taking two hours to subdue i've learned to just bust them off their not worth the trouble.

Had dolphins ( flipper type) take mactuna for big runs during a prolonged fight, and often times they play with it, running repeatedly. Somehow they barely mark a fish tho, injuries similar to your bonnie.

Billy for me also. Pull plenty of spotties who suffer the same fate and looks like that with billies right behind them.

Big Squid will have a go. The description "big weight then went limp" is exactly how a squid would attack, a billy would scream off at 100kph

Not necessarily Brian. Squid have large parrot like " Beaks " which can easily give fingers a 10 stitch fix up!!

I remember fishing Bermagui a few years ago, where a striped marlin took about a minute to decide he wanted a piece of our slow trolled stripey....Had 5 or 6 goes of it then decided no thanks......That pic of the stripey was what we saw on inspection.
