Living in the Whitsundays we don't really see snapper here, we see a few on the Mackay local news every winter but don't hear of them much really.....but i know they come here! a mate of mine gets a few every year in the middle of winter at night in deep water. Now after reading a lot of posts on snapper i have a new years resolution....to catch a big snapper in the whitsundays....i want to see what all you southerners are on about!!! surely they can't be as good as a big red emperor, coral trout or sweetlip! And now you guys have sown the seed....how the hell should i go about it???? plastics??at night?? cut baits?? paternoster bottom bashing or burley and lightly weighted baits???? what sort of bottom??? what depth??? see my problem !
snapper might be one of the best fish to catch down south, but up here they don't rate much. The warmer water changes the taste so they don't taste as good as their southern counter parts either.
Do a search for posts by forum member 'Mozza' in the bay/estuary reports section. he caught a nice snapper (80 odd cm i think) off townsville in about 15m of water on a live yakka. Reckons grunter, fingermark, reds etc of equivalent sizes would tow it backwards, so doesn't rate too high in the fighting stakes either compared to the other fish we have on offer.
But yes they can be caught up here, during the dead of winter. deeper water is better. I think they would frequent our area throughout the year, but aren't an aggressive feeder as our other species so aren't a common catch. you would really have to find a school of them to get any decent chance to get one, but because they also move with other, more aggressive species, they often get muscled out
