I've been hanging out to hit the bay for weeks, so finally a 1/2 decent forecast, but the chance of showers. So that ruled out a family trip, but I asked my young fella if he still wanted to come and he said yes - excellent! And I also invited along a mate - Ash.
We launched at Wello, dropped a few pots at Green, bit lumpy. Headed East, past the flotilla at Harries and into the Rouse. Dropped the rest of the pots, and started drifting for whiting. Didn't have any Gulp sandworms, so just used turtleback worms cut into 1 inch pieces.
Pretty soon the young fella was on with a decent whiting, then another, and another. I was mainly baiting, rigging etc. Then we all started getting baby squire and grassies, so we moved, but couldn't find the whiting patch again. A few more drifts and more baby reefies, no whiting. So we checked the pots and got a couple of keepers.
We then decided to join the crowd of boats on the southern side of the Rouse, there must have been something going on for them to all be there (about 20 boats). Yep! straight into the whiting, and some good quality mostly 25 -27cm fish!
Nicholas was still kicking our butts, until we worked out his style and started hooking a few, then it was double hook ups and the odd triple. Then we'd drift off a patch and get the little reefies again, then move again, and we'd be into the whiting. Great fun!
We left them biting to check the pots, which didn't produce this time. We were going to stay out a bit longer, but Nick had had enough, so I decided to head in. Pretty slow trip home, we collected the pots at Green for just one more. Fair few boats at the ramp, but no real waiting.
All up 39 whiting, 4 sandies, great day out. Back at the ramp by midday, boat washed, fish and crabs cleaned by 3, in the pool for a swim with a few beers, and then cooked up a great feed, of crumbed whiting, and sweet chilli and garlic crab with a couple of rums, awesome!
Finally it feels like summer!

Gidday Matt, Good to see you got a feed today with all those boats around.
A perfect day for your son to have some fun on the water and its great to see he's becoming a serious angler.
Did you put a squid jig out the back?
We were in the Rouse late morning and found to fishing slow except for a million small grassies and spangles.
Ended up with a feed 26 whiting and 6 squid.

Mate, I love that last sentence of yours,it says it all,to get the young bloke out and catch a feed like that, and still be home in time to be cleaned and boat washed etc, while most of us are still out trying to catch something

G'day Brent, good to see you got a few, they were biting well for us early, best session I've ever had out there. It was great to get the young fella into some good fish, there were plenty of bites to keep him keen. Thanks Kerrod, it was a top day! they aren't all like that unfortunatey. With a tinny like mine, you have to pick the days, and go for it. Still rough on the way home, but well worth the effort - and gold to get the young fella keen.

Well done Matt and crew nice feed there mate and a perfect day topped of with an early clean up and a swim.
I was heading to the Rouse tomorrow till I saw rosco's post however my daughter would love a feed of fresh squid so southern bay tomorrow and the Rouse on Thursday/Friday.
