Ausfish SEQ Weather Diary.

With a lot of talk recently about the Snapper stock assessment the old chest nut about the weather rears it's head every time. I though it would be a good idea to keep a 2011 SEQ weather diary where one post a day can detail the high wind and swell reading for each day for the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Readings can be taken from from any reputable source (pardon the pun). At the end of 2011 we can look back and run the figures roughly on fishable days throughout the year. I'll try to do it as often as I can but some help from others would be great.

Any chance of making a sticky mods?

If possible please keep the discussion out of it and just post the daily highs for ease of looking back so we only have 366 posts in stead of 1000..

Gold Coast: Wind High = 15 kn Swell high = 2m

Brisbane: Wind High =20kn Swell High = 2.5m

Sunshine Coast: Wind High = 20kn Swell High = 2.5m

I am also clarifying that you mean ACTUAL readings...not forecasts...perhaps some real time observations from those actually 'out there' could also be included. Maybe including current and water temp?

can't leave the forecast out, as many times people don't get ready to go fishing because of poor weather forecast, and then even because the weather turned out ok at the last minute, they missed the opportunity to go out anyway

Add in all the information you like. A forecast is fine because that is what people use to determine if they go fishing or not. Try to give it for that day only.

The BOM has a data going back 14 months on wind speed at DI, Cape Moreton, Gold Coast and a heap of other places, with a reading at 9am and 3pm, daily average, all the way back to December 09 if that helps?

If we came up with a range of 'fishable' values we could get a result for the past year based on wind only?

If you take a look at the infofish website you might already find some of this info. I know they have some data on catch rates going back 30 odd years, and I have seen a presentation by Bill Sawynok where they have matched catch rates to seasonal weather variations.

Andy, thanks for that but not really looking at catch rates. Just fishable days. Today was a perfect example. Left Mooloolaba after lunch as most were coming in with bugger all. Used 26L of fuel to get to mark. Fish lit up on sounder but nothing biting. Just before dark they fired up and we boated 13
Snapper between 3 of us in the 40-60 cm range plus parrot cod and others. Bite shut down, leave back to ramp in quick time and car park was empty.
