Here's the story , I left home in may 2009 on working holiday and travelled NT,WA,parts of SA and North QLD , had a ball . Got some good cod early 2009, all good! Every time I see a post about murray cod I get a bit excited, think I'm a codaholic or cod addict or something. Anyway we travelled down the QLD coast and now at Toowoomba, where I lived for a few years while the missus done uni, and end up with some good mates here. One who has a cod catching want as well !.....Got talking to him on the 30th about the fact that it was the first year in a long time that I hadn't caught a cod. His response "when are we going??” I said "today!!!" being a smart a@se...."All right then!” So a few phone calls to check what roads are open , tell his old man and brother get there sh!t together we're going after lunch and off we go to the Severn river !.
By the time we get to spot X, the sun has dropped behind the trees, prime time! In with the tinny and kayak.....Bit excited, I caught most of the bottle brush tree’s.Got belted a few times but no fish to the boat, "doh" this is bad!!!...Mate in the kayak got three or four and one of the blokes in my tinny got one....What’s going on, I’ve lost the nack.
Got dark, so we thought we should get some firewood for tea and lighten the esky of some of its cans.
Next morning the river has dropped three or four inches, as the mist is leaving the water we are down on the water and into them!, these fish want the lure today, not as many bumps and more hook ups....Half an hour good fishing, then it slowed down, few more taps but no hook ups.....As the sun pokes its head over the hill and warmed the water a tad, they're on again!!. Not only the fish but the ear piercing cicada's , the way they rattled the inside of your ears , reminded us of cutting very thin RHS with a friction saw !!.Lots of hook ups....After the fish have calmed down, it’s hard to stop casting so I end up doing the under arm short cast under the bottle brush trees to coax a fish from its shady lurk, with three more to the boat.
Bit of a rest before we go for a walk along the small holes after lunch. Usually this is the best fishing , the mate had a good run with seven fish , but myself I seemed to spend more time in the water than my lure unhooking from sticks and logs!!!. Got one at least, the other two blokes got a few as well.
By the time we drove back to camp down the low range 4x4 track it was dark, so some vege's in with the roast that had been on the coals , beers , then a feed and into the swag.
Last morning , better give it to em while we can !......Quick cast from the boat still tied to the tree while the boys got organised and bang , one cast one fish. The lads quickly into the tinny, off we go.... Chose to do the bottom of the hole as my mate was heading towards the top in his yak.....Things were a bit slow with little action....Better go up the top to see how things are going....Mate says "there on ah ???"...MMM "not really". Seemed like the fish had moved up stream....Through a bit of fast water and into the next very shallow hole....Hungry or aggressive, I don't know! But these fish wanted our artificial baits, same as the day before when the sun had hit the water. Along with the (did I mention the ear piercing) cicada’s.
Can't say accurately how many fish we boated but well over 75 cod and 1 catty between four people, all on lures. Probably 40 to 45 good hits (missed fish). All released except one, a 62 cm for the property owners diner.
Great end to the cod less year.
