    Second weave attempt

A few pics of my second attempt at a weave. I don't think the result is too bad but I am dissapointed in my colour selection, I thought the metalic blue would have stood out a bit more. I got the pattern from rod builders tutorials site (think it is a Doc Ski design so thanks for making it available).

It only has one thin coat of finish on it at the moment and it was done in a hurry as one end of the wrap started to come undone I must say there was a bit of panicing.

    That's pretty bloody good Adam.
I bet you can't even see those little bits of blue with the naked eye.
Metallic raises the bar quite a bit as it doesn't like being pushed and pulled without getting damaged and rolling doesn't work as well to close gaps.

I always wet the thread I am going to use before I commit so I get a better idea what it'll look like once it has CP and/or finish. They always darken somewhat and sometimes it shows if you need a greater separation of shades.

you sure have your macro settings worked out LOL

I will usually take photos when i am tightening and packing, because the camera shows gaps that are really difficult to see with the thread reflecting.
Usually they are not an issue, but sometimes the lensing effect of the finish shows them up, so it's worth doing.

I'm pretty sure Raymond Adams did that pattern, but Doc has put quite a few out in the public domain.

    Re: Second weave attempt

    Thanks Owen.
Your right about the little bit of blue, you can't see them by eye but it is a small weave. I wouldn't mind doing this one again with other colours, I'm limited with colours and thicker C or D thread for the wraps (only have black and platinum) all my other threads are A and I remember a post saying to use a thicker wrap than the pattern. Will it look out of shape if I use A for wrap and pattern?

Does this type of small weave work better with a lighter wrap colour?

I had to crop the pic to get it that tight, have a new camera but still learning how to use it.

I must say I really enjoyed doing the weave even if I had to stop 4 times to deal with crying baby (I impressed myself by not loosing my place). Also would like to try a tiger wrap, will take some notes from Mark's thread.

    Nice work for sure.
Now tell me the truth Adam. Are they as hard as they seem??
I'm about to try my first one when I glue some foam on a weaver I've made which will hopefully be next week if these visitors ever leave.
I have to admit I'm apprehensive.

Gees I hope I never work out how to use the camera like Adam can.
Too many of my mistakes will be visible

    Re: Second weave attempt

Scott, I found it easier than expected but definitely not easy and the pattern is by no means a difficult one. I missed a tread for 2 wraps and it was hard to go backwards to put it in. Hardest thing for me is getting a few hours in a row uninterupted.

Take your time I'm sure you will produce a master piece.

Doesn't really matter about the size.
Any "skeleton" type pattern will need high contrast colours.
Threads together seem to kind of reflect off each other.
I don't know how it works exactly, but you can take two colours that look quite different when their in a mass on the spool and out two threads beside each other and you can't tell the difference.
Becomes a headache in multi-colour weaves.
That's why I wet them. gives a better idea what they'll look like in the end.
    Cheers,
    Owen
