Thread: Dropoff East of Swains?

    Dropoff East of Swains?

What do you think would be the pelagic species patrolling the dropoff just east of the Swains?

Has anybody done any trolling out there?

I am guessing Wahoo, Dolphinfish and probably some Billfish. What about tuna? Do you think there would be decent numbers of Yellowfin out there?

I think it would be an interesting exercise to go fishing at the Swains, and then pop out the eastern side and troll along the shelf.

    Thoughts?

i reckon you'll get all the usual suspects, Hoo, Dollies,Striped, Blue and Black Marlin, YellowFin and Doggies. I'm pretty sure they get quiet a few Striped Marlin up that way and Yellowfin should be reasonable common i would think.
Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!

I am not overly interested in the Billfish (I do fish for fun, but mostly for eating) but Wahoo, Mahi Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna would be good eating!

Would be interesting getting onto an XOS Dogtooth Tuna though.

Saumarez and Cato have XOS Dogtooth Tuna, plus all the usual suspects.

Been a few Cairns charter boats heading home from the end of the season getting blues and blacks off Mussy this year. Up there has got to be better as it is deeper water. Top of Fraser still seems to be fishing good heavy tackle at the moment but the bottom contours off it are amazing.

Yeah I think it would be a good option for something different when you are out at the Swains. Most of the time it is just bottom bashing out that way. I have added this to my to-do list for 2011. Just gotta get the next boat with the range though!
