Mate you do not need a surf rod
Any rod with a length of 10 -12ft with a 5inch alvey will catch you a feed of whiting.
At night you need to put on a bigger hook and a slab of mullet of gang hooks with a pilly attached
There are currently mackeral being caught at Rainbow one of the pros caught his quota in two hours(400kg)

Any longer rod (eg. 9ft+) that isn't too light should do the trick. Needs to be able to cast a fair way if there's a bit of surf. Other than that just try to get some fresh bait - worms or pipies, and look for a gutter (deeper for dart, shallow for whiting).

You can also try spinning slugs on a smaller rod. Head away from where the barges go (east towards teewah) and you will come to a point where the beach turns south and the water starts getting a lot rougher. Bait schools turn up there all the time, you can spot them easily from up on the beach. Spin some slugs there for mackerel.
