Island Plastic Session
Havent put up a post since about 2008 so I thought I had better get me act together.
With variables winds and calm seas I took the little 3.75 tinny out around the inshore islands of Bowen today. The water was dirty brown as the rivers were all in full swing but I was keen to have a relaxing day on the water anf blow a few hours throwing around a few plastics around the reef ledges.
Third cast of the berkley grub and I was onto a just legal trout which went back to the drink as he was pretty lean and I was not to keen on filleting much for the day. The next ten casts saw some good stripey action seeing three or four 30cm fish devouring the grub which kept me interested.
I continued to work the edge of the shelving reef off the island and latched onto a nice queeny which jumped around and made quite a racquet. Not suprisingly there were about 4 boats around all bait soakers and they were seeing any action at all. After a quick queenfish quick release at the side of the boat (they dont come in any more as they have a tendancy to destroy stuff out of the water)
I persisted with the grub landing a couple of more small trout and more stripeys. as the itde began to pick up I moved out into about 45 feet and began working a Bozo Kruncha amongst the reef in about 35 feet of water. I was quite happy that I had swapped to my Loomis Pro Blue as i came up hard on a big trout which went for the reef in a big way. I somehow managed to get him out eventhough i felt plenty of coral (got to love the sunline leader) and boated him and going around 65cm he was a good trout.
I was happy with the effort especially the way the pro blue andled the fish andbegan to focus my attention on the big pack of fusiliers being smashed on the point of the island. I hadmy GT stick with me (stella 18000 GT Tcurve special) and thre some cuberas and Heru stickbaits but I was only able to manage a raise of a good GT but he wouldnt get on board.
I went back to throwing plastics and managed to get fouled on a big bombie in about 15 feet of water. Not wanting to lose the placcie I jumped over and went to retrieve the plastic only to notice a big set of antanne sticking out of the reef. Back to the boat for the small air gun and I soon had the cray in the esky along with a trout which was also in the same hole. Very dumb fish
The northerly chased me home early which was a shame as I was having a bit of fun- hopefully reds tomorrow.
