Will be interesting to hear the reason behind it.
I heard it my have been a Power Cat, not a Kevlar, but i could be wrong.
Whatever the reason I'm sure the manufacturer will make sure it doesn't happen again, thankfully no loss of life.

That's what i was thinking... For a KC to sink like that they must have had a CATastrophic failure along the length of one hull and that's not something that you dont notice happening! It will be interesting to see what the cause is!

Ps. Are we sure it was a Kevlacat???
Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!

I have never seen a mono sink, not ever. Not off any reef or any point of queensland...

Yeah bit much for an asking price on the coast guard boat hey.

As for the cat, it was NOT a kevlacat, I did read it, the other day, but it was confirmed to be a powercat. dunno what a specs are on this boat, but if it did have level floatation, I think someone had a leak in their fuel tank and it destroyed it all, and perhaps ethanol was used and it ate through the glass?? Yeah, that's a good story, I reckon we stick to that and tell bligh it is a serious safety risk for boats and she can shove her ethanol in her big fat bloated arse

Makes sense to have everything in a grab bag by the sounds of it.

Andy, it's amazing what will go down. The (mono) dive charter boat called Nautilus sank a few years back at christmas time because the tether line from the buoy they had been anchored too wrapped around one of the props.
I hear they sent a diver in to untangle the rope from the prop, this then started a comic of errors, because whilst the diver was under the water they couldn't start the other engine (in fear of chopping up the diver) and they drifted onto flinders reef. So it does happen to mono's, and i have a mono btw.

An issue with some of these boats is that their moulds are now getting quite old and as we add heavier motors, fixed biminis, bigger eskis and the like the clearance between the water level and the top of the gunwale is not what was originally planned.

Bilge alarms?? Float switches on bilge pumps???

Very strange to fill up with water and roll over on the anchor while ya snoozin.

    Scary stuff

I got a text from a mate up that way today, he mentioned pod cracking and leaking through there??

I am sure they will work it out once they salvage it.

Damn pleased to hear everyone is safe! BIG biteys in that part of the world.

There are no bilge alarms in KC's because you cannot access the bilges there sealed and should not leak! I do know of a 2400 that got a few hundred liters of water in one section due to home installed bungs in the rear corners of the deck , the idea was to stop water pooling there ( scuppers are in the centre) but he expossed a gap between the deck and the hull when doing it but didn't notice , so when fishing water flowed from the deck into one of the rear chambers. It did only enter one section , so he still had 8 uneffected ones for bouyancy.

I dont know how Powercat do there hulls but it sounds like there not sealed sections!

Re: Another Cat bites the dust

I am amazed that in this day and age we have, boats from "reputable manufacturers" that do not have level flotation that is not dependent on hull integrity and resistant to fuel.

How many of our boats would sink like a stone if the hull filled up with water.

I know for certain mine would have before I pulled it off the water for a refit.

I can see what the Tasy boating safety crowd are pushing flotation upgrades.

    cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.

Nope, dont beleive it. That is a actually a cat with a mono photoshopped on top. We all know that mono's are far superier to cats, and its only cats that will tip over..

Yep, I remember that day, was out chasing wahoo north of hutchies and Bribie one approached us the help find fish out semi submerge scuba tanks. We fished out 3 tanks, one medical kit a couple of eskies an few back packs.
got no fish and lost a couple of lure for the day effort.
