Scientists fear mass extinction as oceans choke

Low oxygen levels, which have been found along south-eastern Australia, are known to increase stress on fish.

Australian scientists fear the planet is on the brink of another mass extinction as ocean dead zones continue to grow in size and number.

More than 400 ocean dead zones - areas so low in oxygen that sea life cannot survive - have been reported by oceanographers around the world between 2000 and 2008.

That is compared with 300 in the 1990s and 120 in the 1980s.

Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (CoECRS) and from the University of Queensland, says there is growing evidence that declining oxygen levels in the ocean have played a major role in at least four of the planet's five mass extinctions.

yep, it'd be a very sad day alright. i read the article from your link but the guy just doesn't provide any real answers or any specific causes for the occurance.

i think it goes without saying that reducing human impact on any location has to help preserve the natural values of that location, but i find it unreasonable for humans to be locked out of vast areas of the world simply because "we might wreck it".

all these researchers seem to point to the same GENERIC cause (human impact) and they're probably correct, but they don't have a clue about a SPECIFIC cause and not one of them ever seems to have any real life, workable solutions.

It's likely that this leads back to an issue many of us have been banging on about for ages: Pollution.

It's well known that increased nutrient levels due to runoff encourage the growth of algae and bacteria, which in turn cause oxygen depletion. Not being a Scientist, I must state that this is probably not exhaustive, but watch Fishos get blamed for it, to the exclusion of any other possible cause...

just more reasons for the greenies to have more fishing grounds closed because it makes them look good.....good for nothing.

They should just ban dogs from pooing as well.
It's all the dog poo in the streets that goes into the storm water that goes into the ocean that causes algal blooms.

Ever considered how much dog poo would be washed out with the storm water??
After all dog poo is a fertiliser.

Re: Wouldn't it be sad if this does happen

    From http://blogs.news.com.au/heraldsun/a...g_predictions/

    Dec 18 2008.

PROFESSOR Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, of Queensland University, is Australia’s most quoted reef expert. He’s advised business, green and government groups, and won our rich Eureka Prize for scares about the Great Barrier Reef. He’s chaired a $20 million global warming study of the World Bank.

In 1999, Hoegh-Guldberg warned that the Great Barrier Reef was under pressure from global warming, and much of it had turned white.

In fact, he later admitted the reef had made a “surprising” recovery.

In 2006, he warned high temperatures meant “between 30 and 40 per cent of coral on Queensland’s great Barrier Reef could die within a month”.

In fact, he later admitted this bleaching had “a minimal impact”.

In 2007, he warned that temperature changes of the kind caused by global warming were again bleaching the reef.

In fact, the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network last week said there had been no big damage to the reef caused by climate change in the four years since its last report, and veteran diver Ben Cropp said this week that in 50 years he’d seen none at all.

Yup - with the ABC reporting on it and his reputation, I don't consider it a trusted source.
    Cheers,
    Chris

So chris, do you suspect that mr Ove Hoegh-Guldberg's knees jerk uncontrollably

And I agree Timi, reducing/minimising pollution in our waterways is the key.

Not too sure about finga's method of sticking a cork up every dog's bum (given that training them to use the toilet and then leave the seat down will be a b@stard) but given the speed of the response to global warming by the scientific community, finga's solution will probably fit in nicely with the other theories

Re: Wouldn't it be sad if this does happen

    Mate, it's true.
A population of about 500,000 (people not dogs) can create about 5 tonnes of dog poo a day.
    http://3things.org.au/2010/07/30/pimp-my-poop/
    365 days a year and Brisbane has a population of about 2,000,000 so that's 5 x 365 x 4 = 7,300 tonnes of barkers nests going into The Bay.
It's a huge problem for QLD.

Just do a google for dog poo as a pollutant and dog poo pollution to see the extent of the problem and what it does to a marine ecosystem.

What an absolute piece of garbage, they must be getting desperate, bank balance needs a boost or something just as selfish, board certified wackos pokeing their heads out from under a rug. Relying on the applied science ignorance of the masses.

Quick!!!!!!!! get oil and gas drilling rigs out to those "identified" areas quick smart, there will be motherloads of 2+ million year old resources housed underfloor..... i guarantee...... the abc just keeps failing.

Nothing quite so dramatic I'm afraid.
When I was studying Environmental Science we had to do an assignment on polluters of Moreton Bay.
All the kids chose the usual suspects like cars and industry but I chose dog poo.
Got a HD for that subject too

The global warming milch cow is losing momentum so it's time to come up with a new one.

So wish we had a score card for these dooms day scientists :-

    Prediction

    $$$$ Granted to research prediction.

    Success or failure of prediction

Just put this under each of their new predictions and see how eager they are to cry "wolf" again.

I am more than happy for good causes but constantly frustrated by dramatic little chicken cries of "the sky is falling".

I did like the read I did not too long ago where it said - polititians and greenies are like kangaroos and good to have around and see but when there are too many a good cull is necessary.
    Cheers
