    First Trip to Tinaroo

After the recent weather conditions have stopped us from heading out wide to the reef i got a new determination to get back into the creek fishing again which i haven't done much of in the last 2.5years determined to catch a barra after failing to do so in that time. We decided to head up to tinaroo on the 12th and return on the 15th. With the weather not being the best, rain and overcast conditions hang around most of the day with only some patches of sunshine peaking through it enabled us to fish throughout most of the day. results for the weekend:

    - 30+hrs fishing
    - 2 barra landed (83cm & 45cm)
    - 6-7 bumps by barra failing to hook
    - 1 barra pulled the hooks after about a two second fight(estimated at well over the metre mark) was too fat to even jump out of the water
    - 1 talapia around 40cm (disposed of)

Interestingly enough all the fish (even the bumps) were on soft plastics and all bar the talapia and small barra were on the same squidgy slick rig.. never caught a legal fish on plastics before but after these results they may get some more use. Not bad for the first time we've fished the dam.

    Cheers Nidrac

They were hot on plastics that fortnight. Not so much now, they change week to week. The big fish are definitely not too fat to jump, they often run deep instead. glad you had a good time.

Yeah i found it funny that we didn't even get a bump on the hard bodies even though we were using them probably 1/3 more than the softies.. she may well have been able to jump its just the one time it did try and only got half way out, was probably trying to shake the hooks more than jump, now that i think about it with the power they hit with i would be surprised if they couldn't make it right out of the water..

cheers matt, we were in a 4.2m dory towed by a bt-50 and were staying at the caravan park right on the lake so there is a good chance that you may have... yeah we tried searching around a fair bit but ended up getting all our hits and fish along the same 200m strech. Did you have any success?

one afternoon on the lake i witnessed a school of big fish in a frenzy, jumping like dolphins all around the place.

another time i had a fish of 20kg or so jump about 4 metres vertically on it's first run.

barra do some very cool things that when described to other people lose much of the impact of actually being there.

mate that would be unreal to see... i can't agree more about trying to explain the full impact of what actually happens, i don't think you really can discribe the power and agility of barra and the like you just have to feel/see it for yourself...

I managed to get my first barra on fly that weekend. It got super hot around 2pm, so I brought out the wispy wand and got a 122 and 114 within half hour of each other. I lost one just earlier due to my incorrect "striking" technique (do not lift a fly rod on a barra, the hooks wont set) and lost two more after through who knows what reason Great to hook up to some hefty fish. The smaller fish was fattter by a long shot

Thats unreal, i would be stoked with just one of them fish on normal lures but to get one on fly would just be unbelievable.. yeah it was that same patch of hot weather that we got most of our hits in... suprising how much it influences the bite..
