    Borumba Togas

    Hi all,

It had been 2 months since my last confession at Lake Borumba, so I was very looking forward in getting in touch with a feisty Saratoga.

Reports had been coming through that they had started pairing up, which means very timid fish and hard fishing if targeting these ellusive fish. Over the years myself and a friend of mine have tried to perfect a technique to entice an aggresive strike from these larger males, which seems to work quite effective. Depending on the stage of courtship,we normally try and target the smaller female as to not interfere with the young ones that take sanctum in the fathers mouths.

Due to the discolouration of the water, the choice of lure for the day was a Bassman TT spinnerbait in the black and purple, one of my favourites, and fly of choice was a home made Zonker.

Water Temp was only 24oC which was quite low for the time of year; water was discoloured; it had been raining on and off; and the Togas had paired up however not visible, so all odds stacked against us. However the ended up being a very productive day and fun to be had by the both of us.

We started along one of my favourite rocky ledges to target some Yellas as they sould be playing the game. It wasn't long before we had many missed strikes, one lost 'big' fish and 4 Yellas into the boat within the hour. We then ventured into the always productive bays and we ended up with many short strikes and the "WHAM!" one big run and then another decent run, this fish took approx 5-10mts of line off the reel. A fiesty 90.5cm Toga came to the boat, so I was stoked, not my biggest but I was well chuffed. When I first struck the fish I thought I saw a small school of bait fish fleeing, maybe what this fish was feeding on, but it then dawned on me that it was most likely its young fleeing from the Togas mouth when hooked.

    All up, we scored:
    6 x Yellowbellies (largest 42cm)
    8 x Togas (larest 90.5cm)
    9 x Bass (largest 39cm)

All in all a good day to be had by the both of us.

    Tight lines.
