Thread: GC Seaway scare

    Re: GC Seaway scare

Thats pretty scary mick. Ive had a few hairy moments in the same spot, I know exactly how you feel. I remember seeing a boat smashed up there 2 yrs ago on tv news, I think it was Nev Howard from memory, a very experienced seaway boatie.

I had the same fuel line problem, but the waters are much flatter up here in hervey bay. turned out to be a faulty bulb, but it took me months to track down, cos I changed tanks and lines and had a prob with the second setup, didnt open the breather properly. Anyway, in the checking of the connection to motor, I had forced the connection, and made a small chip in the plastic connector. The reason it runs OK at WOT, is cos the vacuum power of the engine overides the leak. The leaks only show up at low revs or idle.

Glad you got it sorted. The north wall is a very scary thing when the swell is pushing you towards it - certain sinking of the boat........I started giving it an extra 30-50m width after that. Never went close to it again unless it was very calm. PLenty of fish over the deep hole without needing to tangle with rocks.

Ive also performed one rescue in the seaway- at night. They were very glad to see me.

    cheers

Glad to hear you survived the A$$ puckering episode Frank, the North wall is not very friendly. If you are still driving the Polycraft, it would have bounced off the rocks anyway !!!!

    Re: GC Seaway scare

I had a near identical thing happen at the Caloundra Bar a couple of years back.. I was motoring up to the bar to check the crossing conditions.. the waves were standing up as it was a run out tide.. I had the motor in reverse gear to counter a bit of the run out while I assessed the waves.. I was watching this set rolling in from out back and I was thinking geez this set is rolling in closer than the others and was waiting for it to break and the waves got closer and closer so I made the executive decision that I had better get out of dodge... put the motor in gear and accelerated - - - "nothin" ... OMG I am drifting into the drop zone of these waves and my motor is dead and wouldn't restart...

That is the only time in my life I can remember the adrenalin pumping through me so fast that my hands were flat out turning the key... after a few attempts at starting the motor it fired and no sooner had the motor kicked that I was on the plane and out of there... but not before taking at least 4 good waves over the front of the 4.3 centre console.. The only saving grace in my case was that as the wave passed over (yes over) the motor it dragged the back of the boat around so it was point on to the next wave... if not for that I would have been swimming back..

And the worst was that I had pulled a sickie from work and nealy made the news for sinking the boat.. lol
