Sandstone Point smash up...
Ducked down to Pebble Beach just after high tide yesterday to throw a popper around and see if anything was there.
It was about 1.30pm, so not optimal, but high tide is high tide...
First couple of casts got hits, but no hook ups didn't have any of the usual signs to it though.
Tried a couple of different retrieves and pauses to see if I could get a hook up.
Kept getting hits, but no hook ups.
Was getting weight, a touch of drag noise, then nothing.
Ended up bringing it back with a real jerky retrieve and keeping it just under the water.
What followed it back was three squid all around the 35cm mark!
Awesome, but not what I was after, so I started working my way back to the car.
About half way along the beach, there were some garfish jumping around and looking nervous so I got to where they were and put in a few casts.
Then all hell broke loose. A good cast out behind them, two shot bursts with the popper, then an explosion!
I though it must be a massive flattie. Line was moving left, but a bit slack, so I sunk the hooks in and it took off.
There was a rooster tail coming of this thing as it took off like a rocket.
Then a metre long tuna launched out of the water and shook its head!!!
It landed turned away from me and took off for Moreton at a rate of knots.
My 3lb leader and 6lb braid didn't last long. The little 1003 reel had smoke coming off it.
The fish would have been in about 1m of water tops.
Cruising the weed beds and sand flats out the front of Sandstone Point.
Just awesome to see and catch for all of 5 seconds...
Great fun for 40mins in the middle of the day.

Great stuff -I bet that got your heart going for a while.
I was up there on Monday and there was a fair bit of small pelagic action around the Whitepatch area at times. At least some of it was due to longtoms (since I caught a few while chasing whiting) but a few of the swirls were caused by more solid fish - my guess was trevally of some sort. Unfortunately I couldn't connect with any of them!

Yeah the long toms have been around for a while now. Especially out the front.
The Tarpon I have only seen in the creeks though. They are awesome fun.
Spitting lures and carrying on.

Wholly a bloody metre longtail in skinny water would take off like a missle. Ye ha I can't stop thinking of it

Good one Redman.
I had a similar experience a couple of years ago.
We'll have to get together one day before you guys head north.
I'm looking to slip the SS Minnow in at the new ramp early tomorrow.

Not on the popper mate, but there are plenty of little ones there.
I have only caught decent sized tings on a popper, no little ones.
I take my little girl down there when she wants to have a fish.
High tide, live worms, plenty of tings. Not many big ones, but they do come in.
