Further to my previous post I am informed that the Queensland snapper stock assessment was reassessed by the marine scientists in Canberra.
Their report states that the main conclusions of the Queensland snapper stock assessment are justified i.e. Queensland snapper are likely being harvested at or exceeding maximum sustainable levels (fully fished or over fished).
Following perusal of the report by the Chairman of Sunfish (Barry Pollock) he recommends that Fisheries place further restrictions on the take of large snapper (e.g.bag limit of 5 may only include 2 snapper over 50-60 cm).
I understand that Fisheries will proceed to release the Discussion Paper/Regulatory impact Statement (RIS) and reconvene the Snapper working group.
Cheers
Barry
