What do you fear when Boating ?

Thought it might be fun to hear what you fear from the time you pull the boat out of the driveway to when you reverse it back in, this could also be helpfull as a heads up to others in some ways,

For me I don't worry about leaving the bungs out cause it's hard to fear something thats common, , one thing that I fear is from what I read/heard somewhere about black marlin !

this season when they start hitting the gold coast I want to target one and boat the amazing creature but have heard that they jump and do all thier areial stunts along with having the ability to IMALE the person at the other end of the line .
I really hate needles , even novelty size ones attatched to marlin.

    cheers and . . . . . Next .

I usually wear an inflatable life jacket and never take any risks in relation to having a well prepared and equipped boat. Plus, having taken all the boating skills training that I can get, including Biill Corten's splendid bar crossing course, there is nothing on the sea that gives me fear, per se.

What I mostly fear is what I will find when I get back to the ramp. At a basic level, that always means that I have a quick look to see that my car and trailer are still there when I return but it especially means that I am cautious of people in the vicinity of the ramp and car park when I come in late at night on my own.

Theoretically, potential assailants should be aware that fishos carry things like batons and knives and a outboard motor support bracket makes a pretty intimidating looking weapon as well, but depending on what substances have been part of the diet of the blokes that you might find at a lonely ramp, that level of rationale might not be apparent to them.

1770 M&G, we were fishing about 15nm out, nice day and only got better as the day went on but fish were few and far between. Call was made to hang around till dark and see what happens. The fishing did pick up in the hour and a half before dark but just on dusk we heard a splashing noise and looked around to see a pod of whales about 400m away breaching........We decided that heading in while we had a little bit of light might be a fair call, we had seen first hand what a whale does to a boat at speed and didn't want to have the same experience.

Stolen Boat trailer, Nothing would be worse. Specially if your far from home on a Holiday. Where do you leave your boat? where do you get a second trailer etc?

Second fear is hitting a turtle/whale submerged Object when heading offshore at Night. Im so scared of it I hardly ever travel around at night at speed.

I've seen floating debris/old nets/logs etc 20-30km offshore and dodged a few at north QLD during the day enough times to put the wind up me

Much the same, other boaters and the drive to and from the ramp. I had the pleasure of coming back to the ramp to see two knifed tires.

A pedant authority as opposed to the nice ones.

Really takes the wind out of a nice day be it on the road, at the ramp or on the water. No need for the attitude of some. I fear one day exploding at the moron.

I also keep a very good look out at night as have only hit small things to date with small damage but I know eventually something bigger is out there.

kayakers in dark clothing at ,dawn or dusk and no lights.

Other boaters encroaching on personal space on the water or at the ramp and the rubberneckers at the ramp who let their kids walk all over the place. I really don't want to run one down but have come very close.

Safety chain not working on ramp - I can just hear the skegs grinding into the ramp and gelcoat skid marks . Absolutely anal about double checking

Anchor rope letting go at night and the anchor alarm not waking us.

Guess I'm getting to be a grumpy old bXstard

Being unable to start the motor on the return journey lol!
Anchored up and a whale surfaces very close-by, any buddies about to surface adjacent?..........a poor decision when bar crossing re whether the conditions are really suitable............hitting a tree etc at sea or in the river..........let alone the human element, that is the most unpredictable and worrysome!

Re: What do you fear when Boating ?

I fear the shame of coming home once again with no fish after leaving with delusions of greatness.

I shouldn't really fear it by now as it happens so often I should be used to it, but hey.

I also have OCD about the motor, I can hear every noise, although most of them probably don't exist, and I think , if I stop it won't restart, although this has never happened to me .
    Video piracy is stealing?
I wouldn't steal a car, but if a buddy rang me up and said, "Hey man, just got myself a brand new kick Ass Monaro, you want me to burn you a copy?"
    Well 'shit yeah"

I fear lightning. I can deal with most situations, but not that one. Probably not so bad on the polycraft, but pretty fckn scary on the sail boat.

    Out fishing everyone else...
    I don't like embarrassing people

And going for a day of pleasure in boats called or in boats where the first mate is known as Gilligan.

Other then that nothing to worry about really
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good
