Oct 2010 PBA 1770 trip - summary report

I have done a search and I don’t think any PBA members have posted the results of our trip to 1770, from 9th to 16th Oct, (well the results for a ‘PBA’ search have come up ‘zip’ anyway – funny when I know I posted a report last year with a PBA heading!!).

So, here is a belated brief summary report for those 1770 M&G’ers that are interested. You can also check out our website if you want more reports/pics etc (you just can’t get in to the members section as a ‘guest’).

Actually I can summarise our trip in two words…”Freakin WINDY”!

From the six scheduled fishing days, we fished 1 and a bit days, and they were pretty average days too, save for a few hrs on the full day. Of the 19 boats originally planning to go up, 2 dropped out, 14 went up Fri & Sat, and 3 came up mid week to get a better weather window. One or two boats went home without getting wet, such was the weather for the week.

For the second year running our trip did not align with the Ausfish M&G, and hence I don’t believe we competed for the ‘friendly’ trophy anymore either (between PBA & Ausfish). However, it’s probably just as well though, as I’m sure we would have taken the trophy ‘again’ too, and we only needed a day…

    Sat 9th
Travel up to 1770. (a couple of boats went up Fri, and got a morning Mackeral fish in on Sat but no catches, and it was 15 – 20 before increasing). At the evening briefing and BBQ, plenty of guys drink a bit as they know there will be no fishing Sun!

    Sunday
Strong wind warning, and they’re right! No fishing.

    Monday
Prediction had a slight morning window (15 to 20) before a strong change, later to gale winds. ‘Slight’ was right! 6 – 8 boats ventured out early for a Mackeral fish in sometimes 15, but mostly 20. One boat caught a couple of Spots, some others had a few hits but no luck. Most were back by 0900, we stayed out longer (for no results) but gave up when we got crunched by a greeny.

Some boats went to Awoonga chasing Barra & Redclaw. I’m sure the locals were wondering WTF four 6m boats were doing in their dam!

    Tuesday
Gale wind warning, and rain too. No fishing.

    Wednesday
Gale winds dropping to strong winds. Still no fishing.

    Thursday
15 – 20, easing later in the day, so most of the boats head out. The trip out to the reef was very uncomfortable as the seas were a bit ugly from 2+ days of near 40kn, some boats even turn back after ˝ hour or so. The boats spread out, but we headed out past Boult to the shelf, which was a 2h 40m slog straight into it.

The fishing was pretty hard work at first, and we were pestered by a lot of rat fish. Eventually it calmed down, and we started to get into the odd Red. Another boat joined us after lunch & got some Red action too. For an hour or so we had pretty good conditions, but soon had increasing winds, and a storm front, and had 15 – 20 on our tail all the way in.

Early on I lost a couple of good fish, and caught an undersized Red, but my decky Terry hammered me all day. We ended up with 3 Red keepers, the other boat with us the same, and Flash (bobp) got 3 or 4 Reds inside Boult. One other boat got a Red inside Boult too, but overall the fishing was fairly quiet.

    Friday

Strong wind warning! No fishing. Boat cleaning & packing instead.

    Sat

Travel home in 80 – 90km/h SW’lys, with a sh!t load of bait and not many fish!

Three boats delayed their trip, arriving Weds & Thurs from memory. They got out Sat arvo for an overnighter at Musgrave and caught quite a few Reds and other good fish between them.

This trip was the worst (weather wise) in the 10+ odd years the club has been going to 1770, but that can only mean one thing…next year is going to be a ‘pearla’…. Hopefully I will be there!

    Cheers
    Brendon

I think the Flamin' Riptide's bag was better than yours.

We had good weather and a terrible moon, so which was the better trip I wonder?

Great report with excellent photos - better luck next year..........we have hardly been able to get out at all this year with the fickle weather - I think your prediction of a feast in 2011 is very valid (mmm good to be optimistic)......regards........Geeb

Thanks guys. I meant to add that some of the boats had success on flies, and my decky got one on a fly too. I meant to get some off Sean during the week before the trip, but it was a bit chaotic & I didn’t get time. Oh well, next year!

Maybe Timi, but I heard a rumour Rhys had to come up to find the fish for you, as the 'stand-in' skipper couldn't...

Can't we have both??? Seriously, that is a hard one, but I would have preferred to get out more even if the fishing was quiet. It's a long way to go for a week to only get out on one day (and it's just great boating country). Some of the PBA guys are talking about a quick mercy dash up there when we get 3 or 4 good days of weather (what are the odds?), so that will be tempting.

Yep, and I showed the silly old bastard how to catch 'em (with the exception of his STONKER trout). But I learned some great stuff from Rhys. Stuff I can use every day on the water to make me a better Skipper and Fisherman.

    And no, I'm not telling!

only getting out one day in a week?? I think you fella's must have run over a mob of black cats on the way up there but there are a couple of nice reds in there and a cracker blue maroi. Sorry to say but next year the ausfish boys are going to use up all the perfect weather in september

Some nice fish caught given the conditions, well done

    cheers from boony

Cheers Phill, that's the one. I forgot how good the weather can be up there, check out those glass-outs! Actually, it hasn't been a month and I've already forgotten the terrible weather we had...so when are we going back?
