Why Can't I catch a Cobia
I have been out 3 times targeting Cobia now off Caloundra. I didn’t catch any the past two times or today but today was the most frustrating. After getting to the ground and jigging some livies I must have done about 15 drifts back over the bait schools with pillies, livies and plastics for nothing. In between one of the drifts I even saw a cobia free swimming beside the boat.
At a wits end I anchor, burley up, throw a bait over and see the line is wrapped around the end of my rod. Before I could detangle the line a nice little cobe comes from below the boat grabs my bait and snaps me off. ARRRGHHH!
Got some nice by-catch while I was float baiting my burley trail at least!

Re: Why Can't I catch a Cobia
Cobia can be like that. I had one right beside the boat and as I was winding it up I thought it was a shark and when I relised it was a cob it bolted and snapped me off.
Were you out at the 12 mile today.
I didn't go fishing, instead went for a surf as the surf down at ann st was about 3-4 ft with a westerly on it. There was quite a bit of swell out from Moffats. We could see it breaking.
Cheers,
Steve

Re: Why Can't I catch a Cobia
Nah went out to the wave rider bouy btween the bar and the cape. Thought about heading up to the 12 mile again but heard that a few cobia have been on at the bouy!
Coming back across the bar at about 1:30pm there was a south wester blowin and the waves rolling through and breaking across the bar would have been sweet If you had a mate that liked to jetski. Definitaley a good day for surfing!

Re: Why Can't I catch a Cobia
I have never really had any trouble boating a hooked Cobia they are pretty clean fighters with decent mouth structure to hold a hook. Getting them to take a bait can be a bit tricky sometimes, but ove3rall I do not have any real problems with them.
