Thread: Match the Hatch!

    Match the Hatch!

Headed out into the bay for a pre-work fish in Hodad 1 (i.e. the tinny). I zoomed over to the beacons at the northern end of the bay, mindful of the high likelihood of wayward container ships, given the unbelievably perfect conditions .

I jigged a few livies, but couldn't lose one when I put them back down and drifted back and forth past a few different beacons. I noticed a few fish splashing, so thought it was worth using a couple of credits. I also wanted to give the new Kistler 12-20lb spin rod a burl, so rigged up a 10g slug and gave chase.

A couple of looks from the fish, but no cigar. I thought they looked like reasonable sized tuna, so would be good to test the rod, but figured they were feeding on minute bait. On goes the 7g slug purchased from the takle shop at the Carseldine Caltex last week, complete with its tiny fly hook which I added. I kind of figured this might be the last I would see of the lure!

First cast was on the money, right in the middle of the school of half a dozen frenzied fish. A couple of winds and it was action stations!

The next few minutes were a great test for the rod, but even more impressive was the tiny hook staying attached to fish, and also not straightening. The resulting mac tuna was more than 80cm long, so it was no lightweight.

Before letting the fish go, it coughed up a bit of prey, which I thought was worth photographing next to the successful lure. Hence the title "Match the Hatch"!

Caught an 80cm cobia on my last livie, then cruised home at 50km/hr across a glassy calm bay. What a great start to the day!

    Cheers.

    Re: Match the Hatch!

Awesome! 80cm model on a 4cm lure- you gotta love that
Always feels good when you put two and two together and get fish... Surprising that you had no taker son the livie though, pity.
Also- thought it was interesting you used a 'fly'hook and mentioned 'match the hatch' in the same post. Very good!

    Re: Match the Hatch!

Thats one hell of a mac tuna!

I once had a guy at rainbow beach tell me that Mac Tuna were grabbing birds out of the sky as they swooped down for bait. By his reckoning that thing would have been bringing down pelicans. He also told me that he couldn't catch a single one even when he landed his pilly in the middle of the feeding school. Maybe he needed a 7g slug. Or a seagull!

But seriously, nice work, some smart fishing!

Justin. I didn't do enough casting to find out! But I'd guess closer to 50m rather than 100!!

Here we go Nekrofish, a photo of the mac tuna.

I've got a dodgy photo of the cobia on the phone, which is a bit harder to download onto the computer (i.e. I don't know how).

There are a couple of ways of doing it:
    1) Email the pic from your phone to yourself, then save and attach from your email inbox. (access the net from your phone, attach pic and email)

    2) You should have a PC cable somewhere in the box the phone came in. You should get a CD-ROM as well with all the software drivers. Install CD, plug in phone and dump pics onto your desktop.

    3) BLUETOOTH- Turn on the BT function on your phone (Settings-Connectivity-BT), set visibility to 'all' do the same with your PC (in the Control Panel under connectivity or just do a search for Bluetooth on your PC using the 'Search' function in the Start menu). Make sure your PC has the wireless network function activated. Sometimes this is a little switch on your PC with a pic of an antenna. Then you have to find other visible devices and 'Pair' them. Not as hard as it sounds- Google will help you out...

If you're still having trouble, and can be arsed- PM me I'll try talk you through it. I learnt the hard way- trial & error.

    Cheers,
    Jimbo

    Re: Match the Hatch!

Thats a nice way to start the day Jono. The match the hatch scenario gets a bit tricky when the Spotties are feeding on 20mm almost transparent Froggies etc like they were doing a couple of seasons ago.
I am using 10-15 gms for most of my Bay spinning now and it has certainly improved my strike rate on the smaller Tuna

The lure looks like a slider, but it isn't rigged that way.
Do you know what brand it was mate?
Nice fish hope they hang around!
    Cheers and thanks.
