Late decision on Tuesday arvo to cancel the beers and shore based estuary fishing for a trip out to the 12 mile to hopefully smash some big fish.
Got everything ready and teed up my mate Jon and we were at the boat ramp by about 5:30pm. Crossed the bar at Caloundra and punched into the short easterly slop for ¾ hour in the Sefarer V-Sea with no windscreen.
Found a patch of hard stuff with good bait around so anchored up (got it on the third attempt) and were sitting about 50-60m upcurrent of the bait. Berleyed up with cubes of pillys and sent a few whole pillies down the trail un-waited.
The pictures speek for themselves (very happy fishermen). Not everyday you get onto a patch of fish like these. Screaming runs and head shakes. Apart from the one snapper at 47cm the rest were thumpers. Both Jon and myself with P.B’s Jon: 89cm and 8kilo and myself with a 88cm and 8.8kg. It was Jon’s night, catching 5 of the giants and I got 2.
Some interesting advice is that snapper this big seem to bite through 20lb leader. I lost 2 big fish this way, pulled the hooks on one near the boat, and cut my braid off when my line tangle with jons line on one. Jon didn’t miss.
Safely back across the bar at about 1 am wet from rain, exhausted and smiling ear to ear!
