Well folks..here's the very belated trip report from our end september week at 1770. Unfortunately we arrived back home to some major family distraction, so havent had a chance to write up till today...all is good again now though!!
Here's a summary of our trip:
Brother in Law Phil and his youngest lad, dylan arrived at our place late Friday from Melbourne, with his 24' Mustang in tow (with new donk!!) My oldest son (Michael) & I led the way the next morning with Moondancer in tow ready for a great week of fish and fun! 7 day Weather reports were indicating Monday & Tuesday as being the p[ick of the week with winds, seas and rain worsening from Wednesday onwards!
Monday we headed out to Lady Musgrave area for very little return......even had trouble rousing up sufficient livies at the bait grounds. Heaps of smaller fish, but nothing to take home..dissappointing.
Tuesday we headed out early and prospected around a few of our spots around Boult and enjoyed a reasonable haul of nice tuskies and other reefies. I pulled in my PB red emporer, around 5.5kgs, as did Phil. We were ably accompanied most of this day by many small pods of whales..some enjoying themselves 10 meters from our drifting boats with one swimming right under us...awesome to expeience! On the way home a few hours trolling around middle & outer rock only saw us with one spaniard, but a nice one at that at 13kg!
Wednesay the weather started to turn nasty..and must have muddled our brains...we were almost out to our spot around Boult, through he torential downpours when the oil warning alarm on the motor screamed at me.... ..hmmmmmmm.........and where exactly was the oil container Michael? Oh...back at camp!! Useful!! Anyway, enough to get us back home safely and a lesson in checking learned! NEVER get out of routine of topping up the oil with every fuel fill!!!
Over these first few days we had the pleasure of connecting with Boony and the Aussie Pride guys, and Neil (Horse) ...Booney..want to thank you for keeping check on us when we were limping our oil-reuced vessel back to 1770...very much appreciated guys!! I did, however, learn that once he initial alarm sounded, the motor has a good 2 - 3 hours running left wiothout a problem..not that I want to test that again!
The rest of the week was absolute crap weather wise, but saw us jumping in the 4wd's and enjoying day trips around Midle Creek and the other nearby National Parks..if there's water, we can fish......to the grand total of one garfish!
Thursay night we had the pleasure of meeting up at the Agnes Tavern with Boony & Jason from Aussie Pride. After a few enjoyable ales the conversation across the guys was in fine form, with a friendship in the making. This is a real tribute to the Ausfish site & community...wherever and whenever I've made connections with folks here, and we meet up somewhere on water or land, the connection has been awesome! Thats what this site is about for me!!
Boony..looking forward to another catch up soon hopefuly..!!
And Neil...we assume you guys had a smoothihsh trip back to Brissy...pity we didn;t actually get to share that beer in the lagoon....keep a few on ice mate..been a while since we've caught up!
So...whilst not a great trip fish wise, with the weaher against us, we still did OK. ANd...glad we outfished our Victorian counterparts (although I have a sneaking suspicion Phils redie was a little bigger than mine!!)
Thanks again to all the guys who shared their ideas around trolling for spaniards and fishing the Bunker group...much apporeictaed.
We'll certainly be aiming to sneak in anothe quick trip to 1770 before end of year.
Pics below show the best of our catch, including the chinaman fish (note...for those who dont know, whilst it looks like and fights like an awesome fish, this is a no take fish and can also be a toxic ciguaterra carrier)
Cheers,
Lawry
