iPhone if you can afford one, Android phone (not as good) if you can't.

Navionics app on whichever you buy,

How cheap is cheap? a hand held GPS might be a better bet, the phones are not that flash used with typical apps for on the water.

iPhone vs Android isn't Holden vs Ford it's Mercedes Benz vs Ford

Hi that's an argument I am not having, we palmed the iphone off to a family member clunker it was. I was just 20min ago surfing the net on my SGS, exactly the same as on my desktop

HTC seem to be really taking off these days. My eldest son has one and he's a full time uni student studying teaching and hasn't got a p/t job and we didn't help him pay for the phone. Has plenty of add on apps too.

If you want maps you are going to pay, however there are lots of handheld units without maps.
I have a Garmin GPS72 which works fine gives you position speed, odo avg speed etc. Can store waypoints and routes and tracks and if you buy the pc cable you can upload to google earth they were only around $200

    2 choices,

GPS second above, Garmin GPS72 is the most reliable and value for money unit.. its the best.

Iphone, and navionics are also good but the gps above is easier to store tracks and waypoints than on the iphone.

    Get the garmin.
