Agree, Caloundra has a lot of nice waterside spots to pull up on.

Last Sunday we Jetskied from Scarborough to Caloundra, across Deception Bay and up the Pumicstone Passage. Fish and chips by the river and back home again.

Magnificent family day out with a variety of riding, across the bay, fast on the smooth sections of the passage and some great cornering through the narrow sections about 2/3rds of the way up.

how long did it take to get to caloundra.
That would be a good trip.
How much fuel? and what type of ski?

I do that run quite often from Scarborough - on my 2004 2 stroke Yamaha it would use a tank of fuel, you can always refuel at Bribie before you come across the Bay. On my new 2009 4 stroke Yamaha it will use a third of the fuel. On a good day you go up the outside of Bribie and come back through the passage.

Have a lunch and coffee at Bulcock Beach, remember to anchor in knee deep water, dont park it on the sand.

It is a great trip, but you do need to watch the tides a bit as the narrows are quite narrow at low tide and the brown flood waters make it difficult too pick the shallow bits until you are right on top of them.

I can't recall exactly how long it took, I would guess between 75 to 90 minutes each way depending on how much you play and how many stops. We pulled up a couple of times to use the toilet and srtetch your arms and legs etc.

We used about 45-50 litres in each ski, but our skiis do use a bit of fuel as they are both performance skiis at 255hp. One is a 2 seater and the other a 3 seater, RXP-X255 and RXT-x255, both are Seadoo's.

Being performance skiis they are built to accelerate and to turn quickly, but for more family type use of a ski I would go for a ski that will take the rough a bit better, ours are built for hooning on and there are skiis that will ride the through rough better than ours. On ours we try to get some air over the rough or get some really good air going over the swells at high speed.

    Re: Jet Ski Licience

And while I think of it, twice I have had problems riding in the passage, both times have been whilst pulling into the banks.

One occasion we pulled over to a sandbank in the middle, only to partially step off the ski and sink up near my knee in mud without hitting anything solid. Nearly rolled the ski and the missus off into the mud. Next challenge was getting off the mud bank that I thought was a sand bank. We ended up tossing the anchor out and slowly pulling ourselves towards the anchor.

The other occasion was near the assigned camping areas on Bribie about a third of the way up the passage. When pulling in close (in the murky flood water), I stepped off the ski and straight onto very very sharp rocks. That put cuts in my feet and cut small flaps of skin off my toes. OUCH!! It also meant that I had to walk the ski back out through the sharp rocks to get into safe water to start it again.

    Both tough lessons.
