Re: Squid whats with the hype

The Humboldt squid, which is a common large squid found in the Pacific from Chile to California grows to over 100 pounds in weight (45kg). You might need some "special" gear to handle them. On a trip to Victoria a few years ago I was fishing off the jetty at Port Campbell and another guy was fishing for squid. He hooked one, and fought it for about 15 minutes before landing it. It would have been at least 15 pounds - maybe 20 (7 - 9 kg). Made our little Calamari and Tiger squid look puny

well maybe if I was fishing in Chile, I may up spec my Squid gear a tad, but seeing as I am fishing on the South Coast of NSW, kind of got my doubts a 45KG Squid is going to turn up and yank me off the jetty (but you never know) we get quite big Cuttlefish too and they never pose much drama on standard old Squid gear either, except lifting them, they need to be "walked" to shore.

gotta love those big cuttlies - the ones that wont fit in a 10lt bucket - great tucker too
Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!
