I was a bit unsure when I saw that article this morning Silent. Grant does not list a 'flame snapper' at all. The DPI at this site
http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/28_9015.htm
lists a similar looking fish as a flame snapper, with the scientific name Etelis coruscans. Grant doesn't list that scientific name either.
The DPI site indicates that it is a member of the jobfish group of Lutjanids, and it does have a bit of a jobfish look about it.
It's a new one on me though - nice looking fish!

It seems the information in the article is hap-hazard and conflicting. How would you expect a journalist to get facts right anyway?
I have never seen one of these fish before at any size....looks to me like a cross between a rosy jobfish and a gold fish that has eaten too much red coloring.
Jack.
Apparently they are around indo pacific downto NSW.
Yes I was sceptical, and did a search for them.

I used to work at the Courier, and in all fairness Natascha aint a bad type. (Not a fisho either) I believe her husband (Andrew) is one of the chefs on the aussie version of Iron Chef and- surprise surprise writes for the Courier Mail as well. Maybe Flame Snapper will be the next secret meal base on Iron Chef... who knows.
It's a common fish. They frequent deep water, mostly.
Up C.Q. way, the name 'Flame Snapper' is typical. Generally, they are captured wide off the coast rather than in-shore. In the deep blue.

Johnny Mitchell.
