I am due to receive my new Yalta Craft 2200 odessa in mid December, as I am new to offshore fishing, I am hoping someone may share some marks for me to start with in the Bowen /Mackay area, I will be targeting nannygai/red emperor/ coral trout. I am not looking for anyone's secret spot just some general marks to get me started.
Look for Stevens and Parker Reefs I know the Reefari guys fish around there. Spearos like Prince reef.
All about 100km out from Mackay harbour and clearly shown on google maps.
Something to think about - as someone "new to offshore fishing" - 100km offshore might not necessarily be a good place to start? - Depending on your experience with boats and knowledge of the particular sea conditions/weather patterns around Mackay - you might want to stick to the closer islands for a bit, or at least have someone experienced with the local area on board.
Don't mean to be a killjoy - but that's an awful long way out to sea for an inexperienced boatie.
Mate have to agree with moffy, weather up here this year has not been the best for trips like that . you would want local knowledge and some really good weather .There is still a lot of good fishing in closer around the islands.

Hi Antdouglas. I'm almost in the same situation. Have just purchased a new yalta 555 and i live in mackay. I have not yet had the chance to venture out to reefs yet, only fishing around the islands on the couple of trips I have done with some success. Have only got to use the boat a couple of times due to work and weather conditions but will be keen to head out to the reef soon. Just been working out my fuel comsumption as it is a long way out.
I don't have much experience in this area but do have a fair bit of experience in boating offshore.
Let me know when you get your boat so I can let you know where I have caught fish around the islands and we might be able to do a overnighter out to the reef.
What engine and fuel capacity will your boat have?
Thanks for the replies. I know there are a lot of dangers with wide offshore boating. I will definately get some experience in closer before heading out that far. Captain Red Beard can you PM me your details and we'll line something up. Two boats would be better than one if we run into trouble.
The boat is coming with a 150 Yammie four stroke and 250l of fuel so should have a reasonable milage. What do you have on the back of your rig? I live out at Glenden so only a two hour drive to go fishing.
