Thread: Tacklebox or Tacklebag??

    Question Tacklebox or Tacklebag??

Time to upgrade my tackle storage system. I have looked at heaps of different tacke bags and tackle boxes and can't decide so I am after some suggestions.

What do you have? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it? What would you change?

Basically I am into sportfishing so it will need to be able to hold plenty of lures (small, medium and large), plastics, various spools of leader, scissors, pliers, lip grips, camera, sunscreen etc. I'm not particulary concerned if it doesn't have storage for the plastics because I have them in plastics wallets anyway.

Tonight I had a look at a Berkley one and a Boss one. Both had pro's and con's. I know and trust the Berkley name but am not sure of Boss, are they ok?

Budget? Well, something under $150 would be good.

    Hi plastix,

I would definately suggest a bag for the type of fishing you are talking about. Most of them come with removable tackle trays so you can have spares and swap them around depending on what you are targeting. I have a couple for jig heads, half a dozen for bream hardbodies, some for placcies, a couple for barra etc etc..

The bag I am using at the moment is the big orange plano guide series or something to that effect. I think it was about $200 but there are others in the range. (the bright orange is a bit showpony anyway).

Cons: My last bag had metal zips which didn't last long (I look after my things well) and the new one does as well. I have been spraying them with silicone spray which has kept them in top condition. If I had the choice though, I would find a bag with plastic zips or clips or velcro.

    Hope this helps

I use smaller plastic boxes to keep your lures based on size, floating, diving, topwater, etc...

The lot then goes into a 60 litre plastic box were they're at hand and protected.

Same applies to terminal tackle, spare line, etc...

When I don't need the lot (eg walking the bank) I simply place a selection into a spare plastic box and use a small backpack to hold lure box, tools etc...

A friend of mine uses a Pflueger Medalist tackle bag and travels overseas with it. I've used the Plano tackle bags before and didn't look after it well enough. Poor maintenance will render the bag useless in about 12 months.

I use the brown Plano guide series bag. It takes 6 of the big Plano trays and has pockets all over for all kinds of stuff. paid $140 at BCF

I have found bags and saltwater are a poor mix. I do the same as Luc and use a clear 60l plastic box filled with Plano tray boxes and containers. It beats any other tackle system hands down because it is so flexible. A couple of boxes taken out and a few new ones dropped in and you can cover anything from Whiting to Marlin

    Re: Tacklebox or Tacklebag??

i've used 60L tubs and bags in the past.

Currently i use a bag for tackel and a reel storage case.

I found bags with metal zips are a recipe for disaster.

It all depends on how much tackle you have i suppose.

I've been looking at the Plano 1374 box.

holds 4 large lure trays and also a large storage compartment on top for leader, pliers, knifes, beer cooler, etc. SP fisherman woudl also need another velcro bag for their SP collection.

Plano also do a larger 7592 box, which has 5 lure storage compartments.

    Gday Plastix,

I've been through two of the Plano Guide series bags with the metal zips over about 4-5 years of heavy use. The first one didn't last long at all and the guys at tackle world were able to return it to their supplier for me. The second one lasted quite a bit longer but eventually suffered the same fate. The problem is the metal zips corrode, weaken then break. Also had the zips just come apart so you can't zip them up. As tetsuo said, I keep silicon spray up to them as well but eventually they just broke anyway.

They are a great layout but the zips just aren't up to it. I've now bought a blue Shimano bag which has chunky plastic zips and takes four of those larger Plano trays in hte main section (comes with four of their own but i like the plano stuff) and has two side pockets and a generous front pocket. I can fit my plastics wallets in each side pocket (a bit of a squeeze though) and all my leader, scissors, etc in ther front pocket. I also fit some bits and pieces down the side of the big trays in the main compartment.

They come in two sizes but i went for the bigger one and i think they were under $100. bought it at BCF...

    cheers

I have the Boss tackle bag, the only thing i dont like is the limited space for leader, so i have a leader box attached to it instead.

    Re: Tacklebox or Tacklebag??

I have set up various bags for intended target species for yakking, snapper, jew, jacks and whiting. All of them in plano 3 tacklebox bags in differing colours for easy identity. The boat has a big bag that covers all species. That one is a BigW special and in now about 6 yrs old and although looking tired is still in good nick.

the black and red berkley bag has done me for over two years and have one small side pocket zipper failed but other than that it`s been great, around the 60 to 70 dollar mark .every couple of months I give it a soap up and spray all the zips with silicon spray . will be getting another the same when this one fully packs it in. Re: Tacklebox or Tacklebag??

Tackle boxes for my Squidgies, tackle wallet for my Gulp. All my harbodies are in a tackle box too. I then put all my leader, tools, scissors, etc into a backup. It all fits nicely on board and is quick access, should I need it urgently for some reason.

    Re: Tacklebox or Tacklebag??

I normally just use my backpack, and walk the banks, chucking lures , I take a plastic box of the ones suited for the session. Knife, phone, camera, insect repelant , sunscreen. plastic bag to bring fish home in, water bottle, long nosed pliers and sometimes landing net slung onto my backpack.
I use the same backpack for taking my little girl for stroller rides to the park.
A couple of days back I went for a quick fish and caught a little estuary cod, and with only camera , nappy and spoon.
I was lucky to get the barbless hook out of him with the spoon, and not in my hand.

I was thinking I need something like a police utility belt.

    So many different situations.............................
