    Reel Overboard...... Bugger!

    G'day all,

Well today I was throwing the cast net from the tinny chasing some live bait, and as luck would have it the net snagged the hook dangling from the rod tip, rod was laying across thwart seats behind me, anyway the whole lot went overboard into the drink, luckily the hook stayed snagged in the net and I got it all back..... The reel is my old favourite Abu 6500, it's about 22 yrs old and has just had it's 2nd "proper" shop service. Now me being a tightarse am going to pull it apart tomorrow for a thorough clean out....... I've just done a search on here and Inox seems to be the preferred general clean lube etc, is this still the case. I also have some red reel oil called hot sauce or something, so I'll be using some of that as well............ any other suggestions????

    Catch ya's later.

Hi barrabart, look up Alan Tani on google. He does a step by step instructions with photos for servicing and repairing reels. Not sure if your model ABU is one of the reels he does, but definately worth looking up. His tutorials show you how to service all the bearings by opening them up, grease/oil them etc. He also uses hot sauce and thinks it is pretty good. I think he also uses corrosion X (or something like that) and reckons it is the best he has used.

I agree.. Alan Tani's website is the my bible.. Also remember to lay it all out in order when you take it apart... If you don't and get distracted for 5 mins it can be a bit of trail and error to get everything back in they way it is meant to be..

You can download reel schematics to act as a guide. I agree with checking out Alans site. I would not use Inox spray as Lanox leaves a better film for the reel body (anticorrosive). Don't use either as a lubricant for bearings etc
I would wash in White Spirit to clean everything before starting the rebuild

These reels run a dry drag so a bit of a soak (the washer) in shellite and don't contaminate it with oils or grease.I'm not a big fan of Inox/Lanox or any of the WD 40 type products,I would be inclined to completely strip it,give everything a good wash in shellite then re-assemble using your lube of choice.

    G'day all,
Firstly thanks for the suggestions.... I've never heard of this Alan Tani??? so it seems once again starting a thread on here has been well worth it, I'll definitely be checking the site out.
I stripped the Abu today and gave everything a good clean out used the Inox mainly to displace any water I couldn't get with rags and ear cleaners etc, used the "Hot Sauce" on bearings, and have reassembled the reel and flicked a sinker about the front yard, the reel actually feels better then when I first got it back from the shop, when I was cleaning it I was thinking there looked to be too much heavy grease throughout the reel, even engaging the ratchet now seems more positive, and the ratchet has a nice click to it, the drag feels very smooth as these washers were just replaced.
    Anyway thanks again.
