V blocks vs 'egg crate' foam?

    Hi All,
I've got my first rod kit on order and am really looking forward to building my first rod.
I'm wanting to build something simple for both binding and drying (I have a BBQ rotisserie motor for the drying, and will be hand binding).
Anyway, I just got back from Bunnings, and am hesitant to spend $40-50 for horrible wheels to make this. Model car wheels look like they'd be about $30. An old pair of roller blades would be perfect (I think), but where does one find those!
So I'm thinking of just going with some V blocks.
Thing is, I read on another site about someone using some mounted egg crate foam (not actual egg crates!!). Can anyone see an issue with using egg-crate (acoustic) foam, aside from availability?
Assuming the 'depth' of the foam was great enough, I can't see any issues. Although, I can be quite dense at times, hence why I'm asking everyone on here.
    Cheers!

    Hey mate
You used to be able to buy sets of the roller blade wheels in a kit fairly cheap, other then that try the charity second hand shops.

On another note there is a rod building workshop on in early december, might still be a few places if your interested.

You're not trying to suggest that rod building is addictive, are you?

V-blocks of wood mounted, and line them with felt from the $2 shop. Done me well for years.

V blocks with Felt are ok but I would suggest rollers as a far better alternative. The felt can leave a mark on the blank if you haven’t used masking tape to keep the two surfaces apart. Light weight rollers like that from a fly screen. They must be light weight so they turn when you’re turning a very light rod. If the wheels are too heavy then the wheels won’t turn and the end result will leave a mark on the blank.

I know what you're talking about stuie. I see a mail order tackle store has them for about $20. If someone had them locally, I'd grab a couple, but I dont think I've ever seen any in my travels around the local stores.

Damned67, Screen door rollers in the biggest size, with a rubber O ring of the correct size fitted in the groove of the roller like a tyre are a good cheap alternative, they run on a little bearing. Bolt through the middle onto some type of bracket and away you go. Couple of pics in my original post from when i made my wrapper. Still going strong, works a treat.
