Reds off Mooloolaba

Hi All,

Took a client out for a fish the weekend before last and got a few which saved the embarrassment of coming back empty handed. Got our bag of Squire and left them biting to go and get a few parrot and to my surprise a legal Red. Gleno also got one that was the dreaded 2cm below legal. We had a really good show on the sounder and I suspect there was a school there but as always after we get a couple them they always seem to disappear. The weather was awesome and we made it home in less than an hour from the banks. this is boating and fishing at its best.

I was out there that weekend on Sunday and did not catch one red.

Happy with the reef fish we got.

We were in 50m of water on the reef - were you in deeper water?

It sure was calm - we were floating baits with pea sized lead so no current. Water temp at surface 23.6deg.

Hi John,

First legal red we have caught otu there. I did get one about 7 or8 years ago out in front of Morton over a gravel patch but now that is green zone so no more.

Pete, I will save you some as it is on the menu for my 40th thats if you are coming you slaker. What more imortant my birthday or the Kawana classic????

Hi Trev, We got the squire in the 80 to 90m line and the parrot and red in the 40m area. Lot better winding up from 40 especially after canking up from 90. Thats a nice jobbie. I havn't caught one of them in ages. Nice red thoat as well. How do you find the spangles for eating? Always found them to be a bit strong.

Thanks for the info.

The spangled I cooked in the oven after putting some slices into it and pushing into the cuts butter and fresh crushed garlic then on 180deg for 30-40 minutes it was delicious with a holondaise sauce

FIL caught the jobfish - it was a pleasant surprise.

Did you drift with droppers or float bait?

We anchored and sent floaters down a pilchard burley trail - seemed to work pretty well. Fish were mainly over a few hours then shut down early arvo about tide change I think.

Early arvo we had a shark circle us for an hour and we also had remorers under us for about an hour.

We caught a few leadnel as well - filleted and salted for next trip

Trip back was 65kph - a quick run

A great day out - hope to return there in a week from now.

This weekend looks like a blow-out.

We caught them all on floaters sinker size varied theough with some the size of a marble and some double that. We very rarely use droppers as we seam to do better on the floaters.
