    Caloundra Bar

Can anyone tell me how bad/good the Caloundra Bar is. I haven't been out over it for a while and would like to go back to using it.

    Any help would be great

    Thanks

Mate the Cal bar is a peice of cake - perfect for gaining confidence, (or if your a bit rusty) Either hug the bribie side - within 6m of the shore until you've got a clear line through the chop towards cal wide.. I've shot through the middle but its a bit how ya goin' in the middle... you can do it any tide if you stick to the bribie side once your past the boardwalk beacons - just wait n watch others if your not too sure or you have any worries. but if you do your soft just remember that.

Mike i think that ramp is blocked off now, ok for kayaks, but you can't get a car in there.
    Cheers and thanks.

    Gumball,

I've got a 4.5m side console, do you see any issues in it going across.

Caloundra bar is no piece of cake. I used to think it was and crossed it at night a few times, but I didn't respect it enough and paid the price by getting rolled. It can be an easy bar to cross at times - generally small swell and high tide, but most of the time, it breaks all the way across which means you have to get through breaking waves. It is also shallow and I find waves can stand up pretty quickly when you don't expect.

As for a 4.5m side console, it is an open boat which will fill with water easily if you take a wave over the front. Also, I prefer to stand for crossing a bar. You should be OK, but make sure you know what you are doing or have someone experienced go with you the first time.

    Re: Caloundra Bar

there's not a great deal of water on it at the moment even on high tide. i cant get out or in in a 6m cat under 3 hours either side of the low and even after that i have been doing a lot of sand churning there is no visable channel and even on the high tide she is breaking all the way across with any hint of swell and for that reason you cant take anyones advice on where to go as it changes day today. hopefully this swell will do us a favor and remove some of the sand and give us back a bit of a channel.

    Re: Caloundra Bar

I "almost" paid the price on the Caloundra Bar a couple of years back.. but that was due to the motor cutting out as I was just outside the break... took a good few waves over the boat.. 4.3m centre console... it was pure luck that the boat didn't roll before I got the motor restarted....

These days I go straight out through Mooloolaba and not worry about the Caloundra bar.

    Re: Caloundra Bar

I agree with the guys above.... I'm no wimp, but I have a personal policy of NOT crossing any bar, unless I have to. If there is another ramp up to 10-15 ks away, I would take that.
I have crossed many bars over time, and 99.9% of the cases have been a breeze, but I have been scared excreta-less on a few occasions, and got wet on a few more.

Yep i'm sure the local pro fisho that has crossed that bar more times than he's had hot breakfasts wont agree with you as not so long ago he got crunched so bad on the above piece of cake that his 7m costal cat needed a complete rebuild!!!

Like all bars one day it's a piece of cake the next it will make you look stupid!
Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!
